@estelle i haven't finished it yet but the part i read was very interested in that the central conflict was two societies which are in some sense "utopian" simply disagreeing about the right way to live

a good majority of MAGA who are also racist also were already not big fans of the government.
as for the ACLU or any large organization, they largely are more opportunistic than values driven, and their goal then shifts to one of supposed harm reduction as opposed to harm elimination.

The people who actually work at the ACLU might have a relatively easy time of it because a lot of them probably have law degrees

the belief is we can better system our way out of our own self inflicted boondoggles its true.
logically speaking then the best solution would be to kill all the humans, but not the most ethical, so we are apparently opting to kill whoever we think doesn’t contribute enough to the black iron prison.
