Well not sure they are so clueless, since the EU institutions have had their own mastodon instances for a while.
The Commission, the Parliament and the Court of Justice all have an instance.I think it is more a case of the right hand not knowing what the left hand does, ie politician answering before consulting the tech guys.
But we'll see.

Estonia has the digital society they bullshit us about and this is the social network but no the have to make it as unworkable as possible. All regulation and no action, we have feet of clay and at the same time tolerate complete lawlessness when it comes to third country digital networks using the EU with no heed to any laws

I'm pretty fired up exposing the ridiculousness of #WSocial, a new social network purported to be a European alternative to X that launched at Davos (yikes).
The French press devoted many articles to it (meanwhile: crickets about the Fediverse).
Before I go full steam ahead grabbing domain names and creating a web site that shows the weaknesses of W / suggests to check out the Fediverse instead, I want to put it to you: should I do it?
@_elena I don’t think it’s worth the effort. Couple of people announced some vaporware launch and press lazily took it as ”Europes answer” to US social media without a second thought about how ridiculous that statement is. Let them build. Spend your energy on something more productive (improving fedi) instead. Press hype will die after couple of minutes of fame.

@0xtero I found out some really disturbing things about this initiative and I don't want to stay silent. I may write a blog post about it, collecting and sharing the evidence... so that if people appreciate what I write, they could point others to it (people looking at the initiative with interest or journalists for example).
And hey I grabbed a domain name that is PERFECT as a short URL / to redirect to my article. Sometimes staying silent on these things is dangerous

Regarding domain name grabbing: I don’t think this is worth it. I would wonder if they haven’t already reserved the domains they are going to use before the announcement. So that’s likely a waste of money.@juergen they've been so myopic about the whole thing that they forgot to register some key domain names.
I grabbed one this morning and some of my followers did the same yesterday and told me about it.

have a nice day.@FrankauLux @_elena @EUCommission @Curia As an EU citizen who speaks English by the way so no categorising me as British or American with a gripe, we should demand more and get more engagement and practical engagement from the European Union. I have voted yes to all eU referendums in my country including the 1992 Maastricht one and what do we get from the EU? "Go home, we think you're British." Not good enough.

You know who controls most of the French media and how little credibility they have left. I would not base my work on theirs – and I am a journalist (not for French media) living in France.
It's like the question: Do politicians waste energy to fight the so-called "Peace's Board" or do they fight for peace structures like the UN and reforming them?
Do we fight blown up "alternatives" or do we fight *for* our visions? -

@_elena I voted yes. But maybe it would be better to put energy into making the fediverse more accessible. Even to my medium tech savy friends, the fact that you have to choose a server is complicated. So either they choose the default one or they don’t join because they don't see the point in all these different servers (lots of people are lazy to read and be interested). Your introduction was really nice but we might need more ‘tutorials’/why? video's or texts.

I just hate how this was branded as "European answer" by the press, like it would be official EU project - when it clearly was just attention grab by some limelight hungry random CEO. Luckily it doesn't seem to have had much news value (papers in Sweden didn't pick it up) -

@_elena to be very honest, I think you can drive that energy towards something more constructive. Too bad that Fediverse gets only crickets in terms of press attention, but it is what it is. We are growing. Less than others, but who cares? It is about quality, not quantity.

Luckily it doesn't seem to have had much news value (papers in Sweden didn't pick it up)@0xtero there are allegedly links to the Swedish right (that would explain the requirement of IDs to post). Still researching the claims
