    @malte It's been a while since I rented anything.

    When I did, most owners would rather you go direct to them for bookings instead of 3rd parties taking increasingly larger cuts. Just using Booking or search engines to find a place and booking directly - though it comes with its risks.

    Not many platforms will have the same pan-European inventory. There are:
    https://www.hometogo.pl/
    https://www.check24.de/ in Germany
    https://slowhop.com/en in Poland
    https://www.vacavilla.com/en/ in Italy

    etc.

    Or more US solutions like Whimstay, HomeExchange (close to Airbnb in spirit)

    Having said that, individual policies and stances on the Israel/Palestine situation need to be checked.

      Looking for tips on booking accomodation on journeys! I know #AirBnB is profitting from the economy of genocide in Palestine by renting out apartments on stolen land. The same goes for #bookingcom. I don't want to support that kind of business. What other options and alternatives do we have? Hit me with all you know.

        @Koefoed Good question. I might check it out again. It's been 15 years since I used it and back then I had a sense that the community aspect was disappearing as the organization behind it commercialized, which really made a lot of hosts quit (myself included).

          @Koefoed Just looked it up and on top of commercializing the community it also became a paid service. I do remember lots of old couchsurfers started a new initiative called #BeWelcome so I'll try reactivating my account there. Thanks for triggering me to think about this!

              @malte I once heard about fairbnb and thought I should check it out at some point. I never did but maybe you could?

                @malte Sadly, www.fairbnb.coop has been offline for 8 months - their website was hacked and who knows what has happened to them?

                  @malte don't.

                  No idea why people are so obsessed with booking sites.

                  You know you can just rock up to a hotel and negotiate a rate, right?

                    @malte I use booking.com to find/filter/screen places, but then usually contact and book with the hosts directly. In many cases this also is cheaper, since they waive the 5-15% booking fee

                      @malte see if homestay.com has anything nearby. More (UK-based but still generally useful) suggestions here: https://www.ethicalconsumer.org/transport-travel/shopping-guide/ethical-sustainable-travel-companies
