@flyingsaceur This was a tough call. (I actually liked AIX!)

And don’t think I didn’t notice HP-UX was omitted. It’s the right call, of course; people who would choose it aren’t surviving the apocalypse anyway.

      If I was insane: Plan9.

@curtosis Each one of these possible exiles is a story. For HP-UX I think the story would involve a hidden room in a university library where the lights can’t be turned off, and proceeds to a sleeping bag under a conference table

@mdhughes@appdot.net @flyingsaceur@ioc.exchange @flyingsaceur why can’t we pick more than one?

          • realistically: FreeBSD on RISC-V netbook in a Shenzhen studio apartment
          • also possible: A/UX on a Quadra 700 in a bog hut
          • realistic second preference: Lua on an ESP32 terminal emulator on Inception Beach, although I would probably try to get Gauche Scheme on it, instead if Lua. (Lua is nice, though.)

@ramin_hal9001 @mdhughes the thing with Inception Beach is you have all the time in the world. Implement your own scheme!

Each exile is a story. You get one ending, choose a happy one

@mdhughes I have an old memory of an Indy that just appeared one day like a goddamn monolith in a small computer lab full of Gateway 2000 486DX4/100 desktops and I swear I could hear the chorus wailing when it got quiet in there

@flyingsaceur As I said at the time (& got quoted in an SGI memo, which kinda oops), "an Indy is an Indigo without the go."

IRIX is unhappy with insufficient RAM & GPU power. But it would've blown those PC things away.

I was using the Indigo to do dumb 3D graphics rendering for like ad & station bumpers. Whee, but got me playing with GL.

@flyingsaceur I've had great fun imagining a machine which natively interprets Pushdown Non-deterministic Finite Automata. That is: EBNF. Give me one of those for my exile!

Though I've got no drive to exile myself from civilization, I don't see the point in striking out on my own...

That said, I do like Lua...

@flyingsaceur Here it's probably going to be a bastardized NetBSD and probably more 9front and Haiku.

@flyingsaceur Really tough. I want the log cabin, and I can take or leave OpenBSD, but I think I'd want to get away from the PC platform. However, I think you've hit on something with the pairing: a PC is ordinary, everyman, necessarily unpretentious. Not that you can't have a bougie cabin (chalet, anyone?), but that doesn't sound like what's on offer.
