Sadio Mane, The Liverpool Star from Senegal (earning approximately 10.2 million dollars annually),has given the world a lesson in modesty after some fans spotted him carrying a cracked Iphone. His response is legendary:
"Why would I want ten Ferraris, 20 diamond watches and two jet planes? What would that do for the world? I starved, I worked in the fields, I played barefoot, and I didn't go to school. Now I can help people. I prefer to build schools and give poor people food or clothing. I have built schools [and] a stadium; we provide clothes, shoes, and food for people in extreme poverty. In addition, I give 70 euros per month to all people from a very poor Senegalese region in order to contribute to their family economy. I do not need to display luxury cars, luxury homes, trips, and even planes. I prefer that my people receive a little of what life has given me," Mane said.

@cockneylaurie You have already explained what is happening here. Your iPhone-using acquaintances (perhaps because they have more disposable income) buy iPhones new. After a couple of years, they sell them to people who use them another couple of years. What did you think ”second hand” means?

But many people also buy new and use them for many years.

(And software updates are necessary in today’s world because of security issues)

"(And software updates are necessary in today’s world because of security issues)" No as i said Security Updates which generally are provided for longer are necessary.

Updates for "new features" generally just bloat the phone and slow it down, so as to give you more wallpapers or some such. (Actually on Android many apps never require anything but the version before two that your phone comes with.

"What did you think ”second hand” means?" Really implied insults - Blocked

            @MarkHoltom

if the extreme individualism, accumulation drive and consumerism that has come to define the "West" (but now also infecting Asian societies) could lead to happy, sustainable societies there might have been a case for it.

But the evidence is blowing in our face that it only leads to soul crushing alienation, anger, desperate addictions and destruction of our one and only habitat.

We really need to reboot. There is wisdom in older societies, but we also need to invent new ways.

Cultural attitudes. Many cultures valorize those that bring prosperity and well-being to the entire community. What the community values are those people who use their talents and skills to make all better off.

@nuwagaba2 I'm not convinced that lack of morals is the issue.
I think it's a complicated issue that I'm far from understanding fully.
I think 99% have good morals and only want the best for others. We also have in some countries systems in place to ensure a living standard for everyone (which is getting reduced, while the rich ones get richer). In our capitalist system also other things get into the focus and our standards and demands grow and grow
                        🤷🤷

@MarkHoltom What's the Senegalese word for "mensch"?

                                    Goor.
And it has the same polysemy : it basically means "man", but also depending of context it means "someone with genuine and full humanity".

Note also that what Mane is doing is deeply rooted in traditional Senegalese values (which doesn't mean that everybody applies them sincerely - far from it - so kudos to him); and that the same values are behind a lot of the corruption there (anybody getting access to power is supposed to provide for all their relatives).

Cultural attitudes. Many cultures valorize those that bring prosperity and well-being to the entire community. What the community values are those people who use their talents and skills to make all better off.

True, but note that it very often means a very superficial "placate everyone with gifts so that they don't use dark magic to kill me out of jealousy", which is one of the reasons for state failure there¹.
From his declarations, Mane goes way beyond that and demonstrates a genuine empathy towards his fellow rural countrymen (who are abandoned by the state).

¹Of course, imperialists murdering any good local leader is another important reason.

What can we do to create a society where all people don't have to face the challenges of poverty, poor health and standards of living as well as free from hunger?

These are the true stars that should be celebrated.

People who recognize their good fortune and remember those they once were.
