Okay, well I post my stupid little thoughts and I know for a fact it made 16 real people smile.
Why do you need more than that? You don’t want a social network you want a marketing platform. And that’s fine, but don’t confuse the two or pretend that you want one when you want the other.
@nepi can even ask questions on here & get answers from people who know

@nepi screaming into the void vs screaming knowing that about a double digit number of people see it and sigh

@nepi “you’re just preaching to the choir” but preaching to the choir is important.

@nepi *THIS!*
Granted, even if someone wants to market on the Fediverse, there are tools like #FediSuite for all those that want genuine interaction with a community and not merely posting #ads…
- Needless to say people here want *real interaction* and not merely posts that won't get replied upon when someone asks questions…
-
Of course this is the post that gets like hundreds of favs and reposts. Who are you people??! I hope you’re having a nice day but ahhh!!!
@nepi
You mentioned the platform you're on, within a broad statement. This already gave extra boosts on Twitter predictably (so much so, that I sometimes intentionally left it out).
(Was tempted to boost also, I like your thought) -

@nepi me staring at my most popular post on any social media with 200 reposts
And it's on fedi @-@

Yeah this is a strawman. No I don’t care.
@nepi YAS!!! Call out those fallacies, super star!!

@nepi
There's also a shortsightedness here, like they're so used to not having choices to make they imagine themselves to be passive observers. "Not enough people have joined Fediverse, therefore I will not join Fediverse."If just a fraction of those people would make accounts to cross-post, we might have the volume to get the kind of engagement they're asking for.
But also a chunk of the claim that there aren't many people here is patently not true. We have a fraction of what proprietary hellholes like Twitter and Bluesky have, but we do have a very large number (millions) of people, to the point my timeline is always full of art and it's easy to wander around and just find new people, and they are real people, because we have no incentive to let our numbers be inflated by bots.
@Nuki
People are totally deaf to that logic for some reason. Like, I've tried to float the idea of certain subreddits who are growing increasingly hostile towards Reddit to set up a Lemmy, Piefed, mbin, or NodeBB site, and the usuall response is that "it's dominated by tankies." Like, this subreddit has 200,000 weekly users, and all of Lemmy has 40k *monthly* users. The subreddit could *become* Lemmy at the drop of a hat, even if less than half the users followed, but they're looking for any excuse to not make changes.

@nepi "Not having the reach" means "not having the monetization potential".
It's not a bug, it's a feature.
The whole selling point. Except it's free.
-
@nepi me perfectly content not having "an audience" anymore.

@nepi I'm still trying to break myself of the mindset that numbers matter at all.
That never used to be important on the internet. Not on forums and IRC/ICQ/Mucks, etc. You just *gasp* had friends. And most of them liked different things.
I get why artists or businesses might care, but just regular folk? Nah, real conversations don't need numbers or likes.

@janusfox Yeah, I was thinking about that today. All the web 1.0 stuff, there was never "the most followed person' or whatever. There were mods and prolific posters but that's just... a community. It's not this weird metrics game.
