My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today.
Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man. Just last month, on Sept. 14, he turned 90, on the same day Brad and I celebrated our 18th wedding anniversary. I will always treasure that he and I shared that date.
Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend. To the fans who loved him for so many years, thank you. He loved you too.
Rest well, my dear friend. Keep navigating a steady course.

My condolences.

A few years ago I read his book. While the Star Trek content was interesting, what I learned most from it is that being an actor is more of a struggle than those of us outside the industry realize. What also came through is Walter's uniquely understated sense of humor. It's certainly worth looking for at your public library or book store. -

@georgetakei I’m very sorry for your loss.
I never had the pleasure of meeting him, but he sounded like a thoughtful, considerate and decent man by all accounts.

@georgetakei Though Ensign Chekov's departure is sad, my own heart is a little lighter knowing that my mother will have a skilled navigator to guide her journey into the ether (she died yesterday, aged 91)...

He was also incredible as a villain in Babylon 5. A great actor is now within the stars. My thoughts to his friends and family.
