    Thank you to each of you who writes your own toots, hand crafts your own blog posts and stories, draws and paints your own art, and makes your own music.

    I have long liked people's own personal blogs and websites - the indie web - but I guess that, until the increasing proliferation of slop, I had not really appreciated just how much I valued human creativity overall.

    I know that the overbearing tone at the moment is that we should all be using AI, so I am most grateful to those of you who resist, and continue your own creativity.

    @neil In November I will be starting my 13th year of reviewing Christmas movies. (Link in bio).

    It’s a free blog on Wordpress and every year they push more and more to make me use AI on there but it will be a cold day in hell before I do so.

    They’ll pry my keyboard from my cold dead hand.

      @neil I'll resist forever. Even though I appear to be easygoing IRL I have a stubborn side that most people don't know about. I thoroughly and annoyingly enjoy going the complete opposite way and refuse joining the flock. 😅

        @nerdinand

        I can relate to that!

        If it helps, much of my personal blogging is written for an audience of one: me.

        Either because I am writing myself a reminder of what I did, for future me, or simply because I felt the urge to write something.

        I have no blog stats or analytics, and I do not chase numbers or views. I blog because I blog.

        Yes, this is exactly my view too.

        If I publish something and no-one else reads it, I'm still happy because I wrote it for me.

        If someone reads it, I'm thrilled.

        If someone reads it and gets some value out of it, all the better.

            @neil Getting laid off from my freelance copywriting gig because of AI slop actually inspired me to start my blog! Basically running my own one-man backlash, and I know I'm far from being the only one

                @phlash @neil Interestingly i don’t have that problem when creating the curriculum for the programming classes I teach or when sharing my knowledge in courses I give at work. Because there I know that i’m the expert and people want to learn from me.

                  @neil The beautiful thing of having a personal blog is, that I don’t have to drive up site visitors or that I don’t have to constantly increase my output. I simply write about what I want, if nobody wants to read it that’s fine, if somebody finds it useful, that‘s brilliant. But there is no pressure to „optimize“ using AI.

                      Of course it will bust. There's no possible way for it to be profitable. Let's not talk about environmental and labour impact. The goal of its creators is getting rid of human workers, which always complain and are too costly in their eyes. But they miss where value is from : human workers. LLMs try to mimic human produced value, but are deemed to fail. The best they can do is look like what they were trained with. Which is often stolen without consent by AI labs, btw...

                      I fear that as long as it has tremendous utility in coercion and state violence, and the states that gleefully wield it have not yet suffered an unrecoverable loss of coherence, they will financialise its runway at the expense of everything else

                        @neil it's no "resistance" for me, asking an AI to code, create music or whatever sounds like asking a machine to drink beer for me while I handle the payment processing

                          @neil

                          I started using the internet in 1997 when i was 7 years old. Back then it was all about the blogrings. I followed so many bloggers and made many internet friends, whom i got to meet in real life because of blogs.

                          I personally distain AI. I love what the fediverse is doing and am now a Fedi-Knight!

                          The dead internet is no theory and we gotta bring back rss!

                          Newsboat on Linux FTW!!!

                            @neil sounds like a good way of thinking about it. My only “blog” right now is this mastodon account and that’s probably enough for me for now. I don’t want the mental load of “oh do i toot about this or write a post?” or “ah damn, i haven’t written anything in a long time”. It’s however good to see that some people seem to enjoy my toots here, especially my very low-key “travel blog” about my cycling…

                            Would you consider setting up a proper blog outside of mastodon? I would sub to your so low-key travel cycling blog.
