    Toronto’s Trans March happens today, so it seems a good time to say this:

    I’ve recently seen some content online — including some from a former friend — from gay people trying to effectively cut Trans folk out of the LGBT community. “It’s not the same thing” they say.

    Well, duh.

    Yes. Being Trans is a completely different thing than being gay. A person can be gay, or trans, or both, or neither. As a cis gay man, I have zero internal understanding of what being trans is like. It’s alien to me.

    But you know what we all share? Our enemies. The people who can’t abide anything outside of their very limited view of how people are allowed to be in the world. The fundamental misogyny that is the basis of both homophobia and transphobia. *This* is what makes us one community. United we stand, divided we all end up in conversion “therapy”.

    I have no respect for gays who expect others to overcome homophobia while being unwilling to work on their own transphobia.

    Trying to split off trans folk from the queer herd is doing the work of our enemies for them. And it’s not gonna make the Nazis love you or keep you safe. They’ll still be coming for you next.

    Community is power. And I look forward to supporting my community this weekend at Toronto Pride!

      @jvschrag
      Hasn't the trans march been unofficial forever? Seems like it's very existence might be more like the original "Pride as protest" than a street fair featuring a bank with official drag Queens. One of the few things I miss of Canada is living near Church and Carlton this time of year.

        @xinit @PapyrusBrigade I have no idea how official it is, but it definitely has the kind of protest/activist energy I remember from Pride in the 1980s.

            @jvschrag Another cis gay man here. I'm very much in favour of solidarity among the non-standard communities.

              @jvschrag

              Every line of attack the anti-trans weirdos come up with is familiar to me (as an Elder Gay) because they're all things people said about us in the 70s and 80s.

              LGBwiththeT or GTFO.

                    @jvschrag As a cis straight man, I was close friends, fifty years ago, with the key activists of the Scottish Minorities Group, the group which campaigned for, and won, legal rights for gay people in Scotland. And so I can tell you that several of those key activists were trans.

                    #Gay people and #Trans face the same prejudice and oppression from the same bigots -- as do women who chose to express their sexuality in ways the patriarchy disallows.

                    The oppressed need to stand together.
