We are in the midst of a moral panic about social media at the moment and politicians and newspapers are crashing about desperately yelling that something must be done.

@Nickiquote @MiaMarkTwo I am just sick and tired of the argument that that's where the people are. The people are there because you are and you offer no viable alternative or make it even remotely a priority that our rights and data are protected.
Or the alternative is W Social - hyped by the EU - which is possibly even worse.

I don't buy the argument that "it's where the people are" either. I do get annoyed with people who use excuses like "it's the only way I can share photos of my kids with family overseas" or similar. No it fucking isn't. It's just the one you've defaulted to because it's convenient.
I'd never trust *any* option that was hyped by the EU.

@MiaMarkTwo @Nickiquote I really struggle with the defaulting to WhatsApp, which just about everybody seems to do. There are many alternatives that are just as good. It's not just not caring about your own rights but also supporting a company that aggressively stands against the rights of others and is in strong support of a fascist government.

@thisislieven @Nickiquote I think "defaulting to what everyone else is doing" is a big part of the problem. A vast number of people either don't know or don't care how their rights are being curtailed.
I love the idea of what the EU stands for. The older I get, the more I wonder whether it's my own naivety at the time of its inception is the reason for that.

@MiaMarkTwo @Nickiquote The EU has never been perfect but when you dive into the history it truly is something of a miracle we achieved what we did. There's a lot of good, and it's important to remember for EU citizens given what's happening today.
I am fiercely critical of the EU because I know what it can be and - to some extent - has been. I think Delors was the last great political leader we had in Europe, and he signed off in 1995.
