So it's not just that Discord is requiring pictures or IDs to verify age.

That's ... Really not an alternative when we have to do everything we can to INCREASE our connections to others, and the way people connect is via the internet. You're basically suggesting the digital equivalent of "well I don't like capitalism so I'll just move to my hut in the woods", which fine. Good luck with that. But most of us need jobs in order to eat.@JessTheUnstill @itsVague @FknHannu I think we speak from different positions in life.
I prioritize complete disconnection from things that agitate me as I am autistic. Ads are a biggie here and age verification also sets me off.
Let's make another "hut in the woods" analogy. I am sensitive to scent products and am sometimes driven out of a space by them.
Some folks who are sensitive to almost all the airbourne chemistry of modern/industrialized life do in fact move to a hut in the woods or more often a community of rural cabins to escape it.
So my position on age verification is thus similar to someone already living in a rural cabin over petro fumes hearing that a major perfume trend and marketing offensive is underway in the nearest town. They just have one additional reason to avoid it, nothing changes for them.
You can have a job without being on Discord or Facebook of course, and rural areas DO have jobs, just not a lot of desk jobs.

So it's not just that Discord is requiring pictures or IDs to verify age. They're also going to be running AI against everything you do on there to "infer" your age... So make sure you "type old".
Additionally, Discord will implement its age inference model, a new system that runs in the background to help determine whether an account belongs to an adult, without always requiring users to verify their age. Some users may be asked to use multiple methods if more information is needed to assign an age group.”
@JessTheUnstill What’s „Discord“?

@erin Or just make a reference to leaving a message on an answering machine.

@JessTheUnstill they have been running that AI for years now.
-
@JessTheUnstill long running joke that you should never even joke about "being" a number below 18, in any context, because it will trigger discord age verification
@aurelia @JessTheUnstill that is not a joke, that has been happening. You can even get somebody to write a number below 13, edit your own message to be "how old are you?" And then report their message and their account will get locked.

@JessTheUnstill I'm 12 and what is this?
-
@JessTheUnstill Ugh. It's likely because Discord is going IPO in March.
@trecartin @JessTheUnstill Time to make Discord as "ad-friendly" as possible I guess...
-
@JessTheUnstill Well, shit. There are a few Discord groups that I'm on. I'm pretty sure that Discord has a ton of info on me already, but I don't think I'll be back.
@Momgoth @JessTheUnstill Depending on where you live you might be able to request all that data to be deleted. (also yes! This is the right way to think about it. Too many people think that because a company already has a bunch of data trying to minimize your data footprint does not matter.)

I think the main thing keeping people on platforms like Discord & Facebook are the group management features.
Private Facebook groups offer the 'walled garden' vibe for special interests, while Discord makes it much easier to organize a community.
There's a feature gap that I haven't seen any other products step in to fill (especially for non-technical users).
@valsombra @JessTheUnstill @FknHannu And discord managed to convince these communities to talk in a space that has near-zero searchability so there will be a lot of ressources that just get lost in the aether...

@JessTheUnstill https://element.io/en/about might be the solution? Unless theres a catch I am not seeing that actually looks very approachble, usable and secure?

I stopped using Discord a year or two ago not because of any specific issue,* but because too many apps and online communities are clamoring for my attention. Given this development, I will continue to avoid it.
* Unlike the author of the quoted article, whose opening paragraph is giving serious "So tell us how you *really* feel" energy
