    Glossary for Mastodon & the Fediverse:

    "Toot" = A post, refers to Mastodon's mascot 🐘, also "status"

    "Boost" = A post you've shared with your followers, boost something by clicking on 🔁 or 🚀 below a post, also "re-blog"

    "CW" = Content Warning, click ⚠️ when posting to add one, people have to click the warning to see your CW-ed posts

    "Instance" = Alternative name for a Fediverse server, also "node"

    "Vanilla Mastodon" = Standard non-customised Mastodon

    "Birdsite" = Twitter/X

    Any others? 🙂

    @FediTips Well if you explain "Birdsite", you should probably explain "Hellsite" as well

      There seems to be disagreement about which one is hellsite?

      I used to think it meant Twitter, but have heard it used about Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, Tiktok etc 🥴

          @FediTips That's interesting. I think I've only ever encountered it as a nickname for Twitter/X, but I could well be wrong

                  p.s. Some more Fediverse glossary:

                  “Alt Text” = Text descriptions on images, videos, audio

                  "Subtoot" = Posting about someone without mentioning them

                  “LB” or “Last Boost” = Discussing the post you just shared separately

                  "Pol" = Often used in content warnings if someone wants to hide a post about politics

                  "Sportsball” = Any sport, slightly self-mocking

                  "Defederate" = When one server cuts off all connections with another server

                  "🍍" = Fedi people post random pineapples, no one knows why

                      People will use whatever words they want to use, even if no one official uses them.
