@misty @johnefrancis @chris Basis for a lawsuit? It's misleading customers to think that the lake's hydronym is incorrect.

@misty not to harp on the same thing but it's fun to have this going on at the same time that the only thing Carney wants to spend money on instead of cutting funding is 'AI sovereignty' so we can end up paying these same American companies but with servers wasting our water and electricity

@misty Physically in Canada with a US cell provider (not able to switch yet) - can confirm that Google is lying about showing "Lake Ontario" to people physically in Canada. (Unclear whether I would see the correct name with a Canadian provider.)

"Stephen Crawford, minister of public and business service delivery and procurement, said

that some of the websites pull map data directly from Google Maps."
I wonder if there's some sort of philosophy about how governments use technology that made this outcome possible

@mcc Could you imagine! Depending on US services? Well they’re elbows up surely

@misty Not just Canadian businesses.... I have a cottage bakery business and am located just south of Lake Ontario in the Rochester area.
Just removed the embedded Google map on my bakery web page. Fuck this boot licking shit.

I use OpenStreetMap (OsmAnd~ on Android or LineageOS phones), and it still lists it as Lake Ontario.
A search for "Lake America" brought the following:

@markgrieveson Mapquest had a really funny online app that let you rename Lake Ontario to anything you wanted.
(And yes it's still Lake Ontario on Mapquest.)

Hydro One, is the division of Ontario Hydro that provides electricity to Ontario' rural areas. As of this morning, Lake Ontario had been replaced with Lake America on its power outage map. This afternoon they acknowledged this and blamed third party map providers for the change.

@misty just did some quick googling (I know the irony…) here is how to embed a map from OpenStreetMap on a website.

@misty
There are alternatives in place like OpenStreetMaps, which I'm obviously too stupid to use, because earlier I checked if they renamed Lake Ontario and ended up at watching the wrong lake...Lake Ontario in OSM is still Lake Onrario.
