I haven’t been blogging for years, but now seems right to share some of the thoughts I have about Linux and Linux Audio.
First up is getting to know Linux, a thing about OSes, what’s up with all the “distro” talk, and what to expect from yourself if you consider switching, depending on your needs.

@simonjust Bitwig Studio it is!
Ableton runs through Wine, but Wine creates latency.
Studio One is in beta - and still jack - and is in no way as stable as Bitwig, which has utilized PipeWire in a really cool way, which low latency, sandboxed plugins so the DAW doesn’t crash and more.
So yeah! I’m Bitwig now. It’s not that big a change from Ableton, and they had a really good discount in November, when crossgrading from Ableton.

@mosgaard Awesome! Post-xmas I'm contemplating making the jump from Ableton, just for the sake of being able to run Bitwig natively with Linux

@simonjust @mosgaard For the record, Reaper also runs natively under Linux & is the world's best DAW. OK, that last bit is my opinion but the first part is true

@simonjust @mosgaard Yeah, exactly - he sticks to one subject & keeps it short & to the point

@simonjust @jwcph it’s both really great DAWs and really different, when it comes to design and workflow.
And they both have test versions, so they can easily be installed and tested.
Here’s a little Bitwig teaser I liked coming fra Ableton, with some best of functions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45qfgEpKlVY

@mosgaard @simonjust You could actually run Reaper for free forever, if you don't mind the 5-second nag screen on launch (I pay, because while I can, in fact, live with that, I also want to support good products

@johnrohde @mosgaard @simonjust That was the switch I wanted to avoid after I grew out of Garageband - you know, in case Apple turned into even more of a shit company that I wanted out from under... dunno where I got that idea
(I also don't know why people apparently complain about the Reaper interface but we pro'lly shouldn't turn Simon's thread into a Reaperfest
)
The more choices the better!
