In December I notified my IG followers I would be leaving that social network and that if they wanted to follow me, they could do so on my blog, phone, e-mail, or mastodon.

@renata it's so frustrating. I had a similar experience. I even told everyone I was leaving and not to message me on IG/WhatsApp. Took me deleting/disabling everything for people to finally try and reach me else where. Definitely some people I don't talk to anymore 🥲 Hope your journey on the freedom path is a bit more smooth

@quaff There will be people who won't talk to me anymore and to me that means... they were talking to me out of convenience.

@renata
IG was especially terrible for that. Quick replies to random stories or posts make it feel like people are interested, but not really lol My connections now are more intentional and meaningful

️@quaff I hate stories. I muted stories for a lot of people when it was first implemented because of that.
And yes some random replies because it was so easy to send an emoji or whatever. But do these people *really* want a conversation or are they just interacting because it's there?
I want to talk to people.

@renata stories definitely became spammy & annoying really quick

I think for a lot of people it was purely convenient, but I did chat with some that were just looking for an excuse to start a conversation.
Funnily enough, one of my friends, who mostly replied to my posts randomly on IG, ended up calling me 5-6 months after I deactivated my accounts to see if I was still alive
that is always nice to experience! Here's to keeping the people that want to be around

@renata for sure. It's like that in my circles too. Even the iMessage people would use WhatsApp to talk to each other in group chats. I had about 20 group chats, personal, volunteer, work. All of them, disconnected from. It's been a double edged sword. Thankfully, I've managed to convince enough to switch Signal that I am okay with this compromise

If your only way of chatting with specific people is WhatsApp, it's really hard to give up.

... what I wrote, linked and the fact that my profile explicitly said "I AM NOT HERE ANYMORE"
I did what I had to do: I disabled the account without even bothering to read the messages.
I mean, they didn't read my previous messages either, right?
So now I don't have a profile anymore and I'm 100% off big social media. Freedom.
@renata the day I felt like fcbk needed an out of office option was when I realized it felt like work and I wasn't being paid to be there.
Glimpsing the platform sporadically on other people's devices reminds me I'm not missing much.

@krupo @renata that's a good friend. They stuck with you and tells you what they think about it
a bunch of mine had switched in 2021 when WhatsApp changed their privacy policy, and most people I talk to and daily group chats had actually moved... but Signal woes made them go back 🥲 Now I'm back to my techie friends + really close circle that use it. It's enough for me. Just like you, for everyone else, I send them texts. I'm just laying in wait to hit them with the Signal chants again

In December I notified my IG followers I would be leaving that social network and that if they wanted to follow me, they could do so on my blog, phone, e-mail, or mastodon. I left links on my profile, etc. I deleted the app on Jan 1st and never checked it again.
Today to my surprise I received a notification that I had a new follower request from some relative, and when I went there to decline I had *a lot* of unread messages from people who completely ignored...
(continued)
@renata Funny how people don't read … or, I guess *understand* what they read.
I had a friend comment a few weeks ago that they still saw my posts on IG - to which I said that I haven't posted there in years.

Awkward … -
@renata I think that's what https://nolto.social is supposed to be?

You know what would be *really really nice* to have now?
Fediverse for jobs - think #getfedihired and #fediHire but make it a thing of it's own. Instances for people who want to post jobs and seek jobs, but without the horror that is LinkedIn.
@renata I'm still looking for Kotlin Devs and DevOps! Please help to find by boosting!

@renata I was just thinking about this the other day. Also for community organization, or something like Buy Nothing or FB Marketplace. It seems to me that the Fediverse needs more features that support groups and organizations making a home on Fedi.

@renata somebody made one, but it was a javascript project so I lost interest.
I'd need a few day but I think I could find it again. -

I've seen a fediverse-enabled linkedin-like thing but it didn't get traction. -

A good friend indeed
And one of the "killer app features" I like is the expiry window on messages which I use to manage how much of my device storage is taken up by the many pix and video I share with friends and family.
Standard android texting does not have any controls over how much device space gets eaten up duplicating photos in the text app's cache which.... Became a problem on my last handset....
