I really didn’t have money on Proton crashing and burning as a trusted community partner and company due to leadership AI psychosis this rapidly. It’s incredibly disappointing and a huge loss.
@hacks4pancakes Oh, damn, that's so frustrating. Proton's not the only provider I use, but I've relied it as a backup for certain things, and really needed to have confidence in it.
I'd seen some reports of questionable politics and so on, but having prepaid I didn't plan to move off it at this time, but this is completely bat-doodah crazy.
I'm almost at the point of crying with frustration at this stuff; I just don't have the time and energy to deal with it. -

@hacks4pancakes The signs were there, I suppose. I was concerned a few years ago when they rolled out multiple additional services in short succession. I got it from a marketing point of view, but I'd have preferred it if they'd just stuck to doing one thing well, even if it cost a little more.

@fullywoolly @hacks4pancakes I’m on Fastmail and it’s been good. But, I’m also not sure if their AI posture. I stopped hosting my own email server a couple years ago. Maybe I need to rethink that strategy. I wonder if I could poke a hole through my ISP and get a home server setup…
@sigsegv @hacks4pancakes https://www.fastmail.com/blog/an-mcp-server-for-fastmail/ enabling users to use it but staying out of the way. A very quick cursory inspection of their blog and mastodon account shows that's pretty much all there is recently.
Hey @fastmail what is your policy on AI as far as internal development goes?
-
@sigsegv @hacks4pancakes thanks for the nod to fastmail. The AI stance is def something I'm interested in understanding before I move.
@fullywoolly @sigsegv @hacks4pancakes Get in touch with Bron Gondwana, Fastmail’s CEO. He’s very technical and responsive. He’s active on the IETF jmap WG mailing list.

@hacks4pancakes I missed something.
What happened?

But thinking about it, the red flags were there.

> “Due to insufficient velocity,” Proton is not on track to achieve its annual recurring revenue target by the end of the year, one internal document obtained by 404 Media reads. Proton’s year-over-year growth is also “far away from what the market today considers to be good,” and, “By all metrics that matter, we’re an underperforming company.”
See... This... This is a total fabrication.
@401matthall I am suspecting that the CEO is a loooooottttt more responsible of that than any technical delayed feature. In my case, I canceled my subscription when he decide to support Trump. And this leak will be responsible for the cancelation of other people.

@hacks4pancakes Good. But him resigning would be the real win.

@emma narcissists only care about money and downvotes, so
-
@hacks4pancakes It tells me how jaded I am that I read the comments he made and had to re-read the article to see what's controversial or out of the ordinary for execs.
@jsmall @hacks4pancakes the ai psychosis is hitting executives everywhere. I work at a fortune global 500 company and it's getting ugly. They went from saying "it's just a tool to improve your productivity and you'll still write most code" to "you have to disclose how much you use it" to "in 6 months nobody will write code anymore" to "restructuring" in a matter of 2 years. Most of that has happened in the last few months.

@Antigrav
Aaaww fuck not them too?!Although I think I'll wait a bit to see what comes out of this. They seem to be pretty forthcoming about their business, so I'm expecting an update on this from their side.
@hacks4pancakes@shadowdancer @hacks4pancakes, if they do go there an opt in/out would be great.
Im amazed that not more companies/devs choose that road.
By now they surely must see the writing on the wall. -

@hacks4pancakes And nothing out there seems to fulfill all our criteria. Tuta appears to be a popular choice, but isn't without problems. I think that's another reason I hadn't already moved - when I last looked around, I wasn't happier about anything else.
I've done self-hosting before, but it's a lot of work and I'm not on top of things enough to keep it patched against current threats. Also, cloud IPs frequently get blocked but I wouldn't want it on my home network.
Sigh...
-
@karadoc @hacks4pancakes I have been concidering moving to tuta, but it sounds so silly in Swedish that I probably couldn't give the address without starting to giggle.
Right now I'm trying zoho ... which sounds marginally better. -

@hacks4pancakes I understand that affects his karma or something so it's a potent ratio. I stay away from that place, but it's serving a purpose tonight

@ngrbdx
Ditto. I tolerated the crypto crap, but trump was the last straw. They're a bit name, but eff that. While not as polished, Tuta's marketing of, "yeeeah, we're not going to do that like Proton" is pretty solid. -

@hacks4pancakes it's wonderful. i'm enjoying reading with my popcorn.
you know this fragile man boy CEO will be reading this and seething over it on the weekend. him and his chatbot are going to have a good conversation about it.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA -
@cgsines @hacks4pancakes The email part isn't even the worst for me. I finally managed to get the family to use a password manager, we each have our own vault, there is one for the wife and me for shared stuff and there is another one for all of us that has everything we also need on the kids' device.
I personally don't mind KeePass but for sharing with non-technical people it's a pain.@tkissing looks like we're in the same boat. Family Email is elsewhere (https://mailbox.org), but KeepassXC caused too much friction (sync conflicts, UX issues).
Proton Pass just worked. The thought of having to move everything *again* is painful, but I'm not willing to support this company anymore. It's a shame.
I'm not sure what alternatives actually still exist that provide the same level of functionality, ease of use and which have not fallen into the slop trap.
