I really didn’t have money on Proton crashing and burning as a trusted community partner and company due to leadership AI psychosis this rapidly. It’s incredibly disappointing and a huge loss.

@hacks4pancakes It's one thing to fully embrace AI (which on its own is already disappointing). But disregarding any and all concerns about quality or security of the product just for the sake of AI is going full Elon.

The toxic leadership culture on top of that is no surprise to me now. Can't wait for the men coming out with the defense that "without strong leadership, you can't innovate".

I really hope they remove him and put in someone sane. He has been nothing but trouble for years. It's really unfair for the company to have to put out the fires he causes every single year.

@aphantastic @hacks4pancakes I've witnessed that sort of behavior from CEOs before, firsthand. You can feel the toxins in the air when you walk around the offices. And they surround themselves with enablers, each of whom has their own particular brand of toxic behavior.

@hacks4pancakes If you're not using AI to endlessly pentest your software (especially privacy-preserving software), your opps are 100% doing it and you're ngmi

If you use and particularly, pay for anything they make, you need to read this. It’s one of the worst I’ve seen even in the 20s. 😳🫠

I don’t think they’re recovering without the board removing executive leadership. https://www.404media.co/manifestos-fear-and-loser-thinking-inside-protons-ai-reckoning/

@hacks4pancakes who owns the company, do you know? Looks like they need to replace the board in a hurry to save it.

@hacks4pancakes Not to toot *giggle* my own horn, but when I decided to de-Google two years ago, I did in fact consider the then-known, ahem, attitudes of the Proton CEO to be red flags & that's why I decided not to go with Proton, by far the most obvious option at the time.

When people tell us who they are, we should believe them & when a company is run by a person with questionable positions and/or ethics, we should assume that this is what the company stands for. Because it always is.

@hacks4pancakes I had already planned an exit strategy a couple of years ago after some of his outspoken politics that made the news right after I prepaid years ... but this is just nuts.

Overall I was happy with the service though. Email worked. I had very few people I sent emails to on the service and none that I used keys with outside of it. I also appreciated that they kept expanding their offering. I never used their AI, it felt too gimmicky.

Fastmail is on the short list. For now ...

@fullywoolly @hacks4pancakes I’m on Fastmail and it’s been good. But, I’m also not sure if their AI posture. I stopped hosting my own email server a couple years ago. Maybe I need to rethink that strategy. I wonder if I could poke a hole through my ISP and get a home server setup…

Hell I even have problems to replace their own manager not fan per say but it was so dead simple that even elderly none tech people got it.

@sigsegv I'm planning on leaving my cloudflare tunnel, but that might be an option? Vps is hard because those often get blocklisted because of how susceptible they are for abuse but personally I like the option of having the computer offsite, root access, static ip. On the flip side, vps has always been a playground for me and not a production machine that reliable email would demand. Maybe I need two 🤔

@hacks4pancakes Oh, damn, that's so frustrating. Proton's not the only provider I use, but I've relied it as a backup for certain things, and really needed to have confidence in it.
I'd seen some reports of questionable politics and so on, but having prepaid I didn't plan to move off it at this time, but this is completely bat-doodah crazy.

@hacks4pancakes The signs were there, I suppose. I was concerned a few years ago when they rolled out multiple additional services in short succession. I got it from a marketing point of view, but I'd have preferred it if they'd just stuck to doing one thing well, even if it cost a little more.

But thinking about it, the red flags were there.

Proton’s year-over-year growth is also “far away from what the market today considers to be good,” and, “By all metrics that matter, we’re an underperforming company.”

@401matthall I am suspecting that the CEO is a loooooottttt more responsible of that than any technical delayed feature. In my case, I canceled my subscription when he decide to support Trump. And this leak will be responsible for the cancelation of other people.
