The AI Gigafactories call is now open.

@HennaVirkkunen I didn't know that one can buy the required graphics cards for European "AI Gigafactories" from a company other than Nvidia. (That was sarcasm.)
When you will necessarily pump millions/billions of Euros into Nvidia who will then use that money for accounting fraud, how does being entirely dependent on Nvidia (an US-American company) strengthen Europe's technological sovereignty?
I think... what was the name in english....vassalage ?
EU must sometimes get confused and consider it synonymous to sovereignty.... -

EU must sometimes get confused and consider it synonymous to sovereignty....@andre123 Maybe Jensen Huang promised @HennaVirkkunen a million or two if she steals billions from European taxpayers and funnels them into his coffers.

Big Tech delenda est.
Or else EU risks to be burning every time it's summer.... but you know....we want to be an AI continent...
️ (a burning AI continent).
At least It will make money for the stock markets and for.... what was the name again....lobbies ? -
The AI Gigafactories call is now open.
Today, we launched a call for tenders to establish up to 7 AI Gigafactories across Europe, boosting Europe’s computing capacity and unlocking more than €30 billion in investment.
I am pleased to see Member States, industry, and the Commission coming together to build these facilities, which are key to strengthening our technological sovereignty.
This is a milestone for Europe in becoming an AI Continent.@HennaVirkkunen booooooo

This is a milestone for Europe in becoming an AI Continent.@HennaVirkkunen It might be helpful to actually say what kind of "AI" we are chasing here with a drop in the ocean in terms of investment and 15 years too late. By looking at the link posted it seems mainly geared for LLMs - which is just stupid. Even if it were worthwhile tech, which it isn't, EU strong governance isn't conducive to "steal first, ask forgiveness later" mentality LLMs are built on.
Also please consider your language. "Factories" for no manufacturing. "AI" for no intelligence... -

I like to think of Europe as having some immunity to the crass plutocrat techbro bubble that is destroying my country
You're ruining my impression
Judging by the reactions to your post, maybe you want leave Europe and move here to shill climate destroying trendy nonsense?
I don't think you'll take me up on the offer. It probably bothers you. And it should
Think about why the idea of moving to the USA bothers you
And then think about what you're representing

Build an uncommercial search engine with AI Features that actually work without hallucinating. just building data centers feels a bit like "take our money so the Jobs stay in europe"How about building for the people and not for the industry

@benroyce @HennaVirkkunen Ben, the problem is that many politicians are actually ignorant about what AI *actually* is. I'm writing this without moral judgment. Even a large number of colleagues are unaware of the way AI works, and of what it can and can't do. Thus, it's quite understandable that politicians believe the hype that companies and media promote, and believe AI will boost computing capabilities, or enable new scientific paradigms, without realising that it cannot discover what is not already there. So, the real problem is how to educate our politicians. I try to do my part whenever I have the occasion or I'm given the possibilities, but I feel this is a titanic endeavour.

i think #AI is another version of the #crypto bubble but instead of hooking starry-eyed gambling degenerates, AI has hooked a certain class of business and govt bureaucrat
when crypto craters it destroys some randos
but when AI craters it's going to kill companies and leave govts strained
it's #technofetishization
suits jumping on a gossipy trendy buzzword bandwagon. little concrete benefit and, as you say, little understanding
-
well said
it does come across as Europe doing a "I want to go to the party too!" kind of cringe desperation
when, as you say, a better strategy would be to watch closely, tread cautiously, and only make a commitment when the benefits are obvious. like high end scientific applications
not this nervous clawing for relevance. that's a recipe for more irrelevance
Europe could be prudent and be left standing in the lead when the AI hysteria goes belly up elsewhere
