They've been deliberately splitting up booking groups to push people into paying extra for seat selection for a while. That wouldn't be too objectionable for a group of adults but they are habitually separating kids from their parents too, in fact based on recent results they seem to be specifically targeting kids with this nonsense.
They just tried it again with us, allocating my wife and I seats next to each other but putting our 11 year old on their own in a completely different part of the plane. Calling them up initially generated the response "I can fix that for you, that'll be an extra $40 for seat selection", more than it would cost to select seats online. When that wasn't accepted the next step in the script was to try to pretend that we might have more luck trying to get our seats changed at check-in. When it was pointed out that they've fixed this for us on the phone before they had to pretend to go ask permission to exercise discretion, then they finally fixed it at no extra charge.
