    @fesshole
    Did you try telling him the truth? When my dad heard that he could hurt people with his car as well as getting hurt himself, he knew he couldn't live with the guilt.

      @sloanlance @fesshole I'm glad that you were successful with that

      we weren't and my grandfather caused a multi-car accident at speed, totaled 5 cars and put several people in the hospital

      he never really recovered from the realization that he'd done so much harm to others

      I keep telling this story in the hope that nobody else will experience what he and his victims did

        @sloanlance

        I'm glad that worked for you, but every old person reacts differently.

        My father in law gave up his car in his late 80s without being prompted.

        My father, in contrast, continued to drive until his mid-90s, long after he and the car were roadworthy. Nothing we said made any difference, because he was mentally too inflexible to imagine life without a car. In the end, the car couldn't get through the MoT test, and I scrapped it for him. Even at that point, I had to talk him out of driving it with no MoT certificate. By that time, he was too debilitated to buy another car, and he never drove again.

          @fesshole losing mobility can be isolating, so here's a reminder that e-trikes exist if a regular E-Bike isn't suitable.
          Also show them this if they say they are too old: https://doyouremember.com/120809/olivia-de-havilland-bike-riding-104

            @marcaurelevers @fesshole my dad has an e trike and it is a game changer for his mobility. He struggles to walk but can ride the trike for miles. Less good for my mobility though as I did my back in lifting it up once. So heavy!

              @paulfreeman @fesshole that's so lovely to hear. Hope your back recovers. For me swimming and Tai Chi Chuan (martial arts flavour) did the trick after I slipped a disk.

                  @fesshole I'm actually really on board with this, he made the choice and doesn't lose any dignity while still making him (and the roads) safer.

                      @marcaurelevers @fesshole Why would Granddad be any less of a menace on the road with a trike?

                        @DearlyArt @fesshole 😃
                        less potential for collateral damage I suppose, assuming that the car is gone as per OP
