@wonka @Felila @FlockOfCats No, no, no DE-fragging! It's the opposite of fragging! But almost as soothing! Although it does require a *hard* disk. You can't defrag a floppy disk.
@RachelThornSub @wonka @Felila @FlockOfCats and to use that hard disk to store your OS and applications, it's surprisingly disappointing to find that your general storage hard disk which hasn't been defragged in years barely needs it!

If you performed the depicted activity, make sure you schedule all the appropriate preventive medical examinations for your age.

lol this is such a boomer post, like “boost if you used to drink from the garden hose!!” But I do amuse myself greatly by making fun of our advancing age

Gen X was still doing that too

️@FlockOfCats My fitst computer mouse cost me 160 DM. To use it with Windows 3.0.
Today you get a much advanced device for that price.

I had a Sinclair computer too here in the US. Came in multiple little bags . Was amazed when I finished soldering all the parts onto the PCB that it actually worked.
Quickly bought an old keyboard from a terminal and wired it in along with a repeating key circuit.
Never had a mouse hooked to it.

️@FlockOfCats ...I use trackballs, I clean the lint and gunk off the bearings daily, ...never occurred to me to wash the actual trackball in soapy water like that
-
@FlockOfCats @Rhube I worked in a college. We had to glue ours closed or they got stolen!

️@FlockOfCats if you use a trackball, then you still have to do that once in a while!

@RachelThornSub @FlockOfCats I remember defragging. Very peaceful.
@Felila @RachelThornSub @FlockOfCats watching the disk play tetris with the data and pray it worked after
almost as much fun as setting the interleave factor on old ST-506 hard disk interfaces

️@FlockOfCats nine times out of ten it wasn't the ball that was dirty, but the build up on the little wheels that transfered movement from the ball to the rotary encoders for the X and Y movement
spent many an hour taking mice apart in the workshop to clean all the little rollers and encoders to save the company a small fortune
we had a stack of mouse boxes in the corner to put the cleaned mice in to make users think they were getting a new one, then bring the box back, to reuse again

Ball mice work on glass tables. Just saying...

️@FlockOfCats Not only did I wash the balls, I used a toothpick to carefully scrape off the stuck-on gunk from the two rollers that touched that filthy ball.

️@FlockOfCats I was a tech teacher when mouse balls were a thing. Kids used to steal them either to use as missiles at break time or just to mess up the lesson and piss off the teacher. We used to drill the retaining ring and fit small screws to discourage them. But if course this also discouraged anyone from cleaning them.
