    We are altering the very #climate of the planet in a way that's dangerous for our own survival and the stability of our ecosystems. With only a few exceptions, our politicians are not only looking the other way but actively making the problem worse.

    @petergleick We have such a politician in Germany. Formerly enployed by the fossil fuel industry, she was working in government already years ago when Germany killed off its solar industry. Now she‘s the secretary for economy/energy and every week there’s news about how she‘s building LNG powerplants while harming renewables. She actually said that the business case for renewables needs to be made worse.
    But people voted her party into office so it’s Germans who are at fault. #ReicheRücktritt

      @petergleick

      perhaps someone should explain to them that having enough MOOLA in the bank or off shore accts can't keep them from dying from bad air, etc.

        So what do we do about it, nothing? Just sit here complaining about it? I have seen so many dozens of concerned citizens who just want to make sure I'm aware of the issue, over and over and over again.

        I don't even bother talking about important dangerous things, unless there is something we can do about it, effectively. Clear your mind for a moment and understand that, why don't ya.

          correction: our politicians know exactly what they are doing and WANT to make this problem worse.

          they get bribed, manipulated, evangelized into eschatological apocalypse-scheme ideologies, blackmailed, threatened.

          they're drug addicted, power addicted, oil addicted, money addicted and or psychotic. their bosses are chess players who are satisfied with wiping the whole board as long as they are the winner in the end. and who of them will be the winner is the only question these entities care about.

          all we can do is to stop being their pawns.
          become the board. become indispensible for whatever game they want to play.

          ditch money
          ditch economy
          ditch capitalism

          radicalize yourself today
          and fuck this shit!

            @petergleick We’ve known about the climate crisis for decades. And I hope I don’t need to explain why politicians – all politicians – are forced to act this way. That’s why it’s pointless to believe that swapping one politician for another would make any difference. We’d have to replace the political system – that is, capitalism – on a global scale. Which isn’t possible.

              @compfu @petergleick Das liegt doch nicht an einzelnen Politikern. Andere sagen es nur nicht so deutlich, sind aber letztendlich genauso machtlos.

                @petergleick Agree - and Resistance begins with naming things clearly.
                Denial is not debate.
                Nationalism is not love.
                Scapegoating is not leadership.
                Propaganda is not truth.
                And sacrificing the future for power is not politics - it is betrayal.

                There are no better people by birth, nation, race, or identity. There are only people willing to see clearly, act responsibly, and defend rules based on evidence. But the first act of resistance is still the simplest one: Refuse the lie!

                  @compfu @petergleick hey, we had a similar guy in our previous right-wing government in Spain. Industry Ministry, he stalled solar development, in Spain! (I remember a circa-2018 comparison, Germany and most of EU has more solar than Spain). All because fossil industry influence (some would say bribery), of course.
                  Once the government changed and repealed that law, solar (and wind) has growth to the point that we are less vulnerable* to Hormuz-like events.
                  * Nevertheless, electrical companies greed has lead to an unbalance in grid investment and therefore resilience, thus the 1-year-ago blackout.

                    Politicians are not the problem.

                      @petergleick At their best, all politicians can do is to regulate economy and people with the tools of the underlying political system. But what if the biggest source of the problem is ungovernable by constitutions, dictators and even laws of nature?

                        @petergleick
                        🫱🏻‍🫲🏿 #politicians suck: they are not shutting down the cruel and polluting animal factories.

                        🍖 however, most people refuse to stop eating #animals, despite it being the easiest and most impactful individual action you can take.

                        🧼 when every meal most of us put on our plates is made of #flesh and #breastmilk, it's too easy to wash that bloody guilt of our hands by pointing to politicians.

                        🌱 take responsibility and #govegan now, because politics is too important to be left for the politicians.
