I believe the currently supported way to do this is to migrate the account. This includes if you want to do it on the same instance, at least as far as I'm aware. Who wouldn't want to be on the same instance as @alice when possible?

Yeah, generally changing your handle is done by moving to another account which can be on the same instance or another one.

Part of the process in the guide sets your old account to redirect people to your new one, but this is optional.
