I hear a lot about Matrix being a truly decentralized protocol.

@nathanael @vmaurin it may be right now, but Delta Chat is still in its early stages (well, that's a statement

)Think about what WhatsApp was when it was first available.
Delta Chat hasn't got the VC money WhatsApp and other apps had in the past, and they are doing a great job in under promising and over delivering

@ggrey that's an interesting and useful perspective on it. Thank you!
@fluidlogic you're welcome

I hear a lot about Matrix being a truly decentralized protocol. But if you register with an instance and it goes down, all users under that instance go down with it. It happened a couple of months ago @ matrix.com and everybody knows it.
Differently, Delta Chat allows users to register same account on different relays so if the main goes down, users can just switch relay and keep chatting.
That makes Delta Chat one step ahead. Prove me wrong.
Places burden of protecting one's identity onto end user. Anywhere else, if your account gets stolen, you can try contacting admins, changing password, logging out unknown devices. With @delta, user is one underportected device and QR scan away from unrecoverable grand theft account.
I find the trade-off fair and in fact quiet like it, but it assumes the end user is being careful and protects their device well. And in many cases users are, unfortunately, rather lousy with their gadgets and data.

If you loose your device nowadays, normally your first priority is how to go back home without Uber

I think we as a society need a better culture for keeping and taking care of personal devices, but yeah, here we are needing smartfone for literally everything.

worse case you tell everyone to kick the old profile from groups etc. and write to you from the new one
stealing your profile is not so easy unless you use phone without PIN, with multi-device as backup is hard to lose it

#matrix #deltachat #messagingapp
These two projects adress very different kimds of chats. While I love DeltaChat
for 1:1 chats, or small groups, setting up a big group, where people may join, or leave at will, is a major PITA compared to Matrix.Matrix replaces Slack, Telegram, or Teams. Delta replaces Whatsapp, or Signal. Different goals, different solutions, and different tradeoffs.

Exactly why we promoted Delta Chat in Iran.
When a server gets blocked, users simply switch to another relay without losing history or contacts seamless migration Matrix doesn't have yet.Plus Delta Chat servers are lightweight and anyone can run one. Agreed, it's one step ahead.
Take a lesson from free software.
