Two food-related "fun facts" that are neither fun nor facts, and which I wish people would stop propagating:

    * Every fig has a dead wasp inside (they do not, only some species of figs do and the commercially-produced ones do not, also fig wasps are about the size of a single fig seed)
    * Artificial vanilla flavor comes from beaver anal glands (it does not, do people really think it's more economical to milk beaver anuses?! vanillin comes from a lot of places, mostly wood pulp)

@fluffy So I don't eat beaver ass every time I have some vanilla? Sad news for beaver ass fans indeed.

@fluffy a bit of a side note re: fig wasps and their size, but i think ‘what wasps are’ is also a thing people could be better educated on generally. any time wasp facts come up, people imagine big hornety things and not, like, the tens of thousands of species that are just lil guys

@brhfl Oh absolutely! Also people don't realize that even the big wasps are important pollinators who are just doing their best

One fun food fact that I do think *is* fun and is factual, though, is that "baby carrots" are *not* young carrots, they're just, like, carrots that weren't deemed attractive enough to be sold as carrots and then get cut up into "baby carrot" pieces and then tumbled around to make them rounder. And I think that's super cool, it's a great way to make use of produce that would otherwise go to waste!

@fluffy I had not heard either of these, but thanks for inoculating me against the day I do!
