@AuntyRed @nygl @cyberlyra Worth following @elena if you're interested in YunoHost, and potentially hosting your own server apps with it, such as your own Mastodon or Pixelfed instance. Or Odoo, if you're so inclined...

Does anyone make a document for dismantling Microsoft infrastructure in a medium sized organisation? Is it even possible? DNS, DHCP, AD, etc. Maybe a phased approach.

      Just out of theoretical interest.

@nygl I guess the easiest way to move would be to set up FreeIPA, establish cross trust and then starting to migrate services, users and devices from one to the other.

      https://www.freeipa.org/page/Active_Directory_trust_setup

Maybe keep an eye on @eu_os they will probably test something like that somewhat soon.

@izzy @nygl 389ds looks promising. I’ve got some OpenLDAP servers that communicate with Active Directory and they are awful to manage. I dread every time I have to reconfigure slapd.

@futzle @izzy @nygl how often do you reconfigure slapd?

OpenLDAP can replicate directly from AD using M$ DirSync these days. So getting AD accounts into OpenLDAP is pretty painless.

@hyc @izzy @nygl Probably haven’t had to for a year or two. It’s set up just like you said. I wouldn’t have called it pretty painless. The cn=config configuration method might not be so bad (reserving judgement on this) if any of the documentation and examples actually used it.

@futzle @izzy @nygl we've had a vacancy for doc writer in the Project for several years now. For some reason people are happier to volunteer code updates than doc updates. One would think the number of people with requisite skills to write clearly in human languages would vastly outnumber people who can write in computing language but so it goes.

@AuntyRed @aj @nygl @cyberlyra YunoHost is amazing! I wrote a tutorial about how to set it up here: https://blog.elenarossini.com/a-newbies-guide-to-self-hosting-with-yunohost-part-2-installation-setup/

I have tried many many open source applications and had a brilliant experience. Now, I would not recommend every fedi software out there... like instead of Mastodon or Pixelfed I would highly encourage you to look at GoToSocial (which is powering this instance). It's absolutely brilliant, well-maintained and low on resources

@elena @aj @nygl @cyberlyra out of curiosity, have you tried using Imich with it?

I am nearing the end of the free tier of Google storage, and looking for non-subscription options for keeping my photos safe

I tried setting it up myself on bare metal a but over a year ago but kept running into problems

@AuntyRed @aj @nygl @cyberlyra I haven't yet but I keep hearing AMAZING things about Immich. I'm just old school and I like to keep my photos on external drives (backed up 4x)...

@futzle @hyc @nygl maybe I should look into that, it's not first-order computer touching and I like to think I'm an okay writer

Tangentially / regarding the original topic of the thread, I did make this a while back, but it's not coming from a Microsoft setup
