Proposal: What if you designed a CAPTCHA that looks like static to a human but contains just enough bare structure that all LLM AI providers can see clear letters and numbers in it. And then the test is that you only allow people through if they click "I cannot read this"

@mcc Counterpoint: the purpose of captcha is not to filter out bots, it's to make humans do work for free.

@lahosken the mastodon implementation of quote posts is extremely glitchy

@mcc @lahosken Not glitchy, that instance blocks (scroll to the bottom, click on Moderated servers) a ton of servers:

@mcc @lahosken (you can see the quoted post by clicking through to mastodon.social; glitch-soc instances make this easy by having the timestamp link to the original server, regular Mastodon has to go through the ⋯ menu).

@jernej__s @mcc @lahosken Interesting, I hadn't considered that. I've seen it mainly on the official Mastodon clients if the logged in user has muted/blocked the quoted author. Phanpy at least says "[user] muted" and the option to show it anyway.

@zimzat @mcc @lahosken I'm not sure what the web interface shows for muted/blocked accounts (I haven't seen anybody quoting those yet), but I did see some quote boxes showing "Instance/User limited by your server"; can't remember if there was a link to show the quote anyway.

@mcc problem is, you'd need the captcha to overwrite the ingrained impulse that people have of trying to appease to authority (i.e. if they're told there's a number there, they will try to guess a number instead of admitting they see nothing)

@mcc (slightly related, but I've seen some health surveys in Quebec include a question which explicitly states it's actually a question to see if you're really paying attention, and you have to answer "I do not wish to answer this question" instead of a spectrum between "strongly agree" and "strongly disagree";I imagine it does well in dealing with the "what if my survey responder just doesn't care" problem of statistics)
