        @vwdasher have a mate who's been an infrastructure manager on big projects and housing project. He's been amazed for 20years that every roofing system hasn't had integrated solar as part of the system. The pull out panels are interesting but again integrated into the maufacture reducing weight and cost not duplicating roof etc seems an obvious progression. Wonder if we will see it?

            @vwdasher

            Nope. We have solar. We have an EV. There is no way those two will ever be combined in a meaningful way.

            We have 24 panels on the roof for a total of 7 kW peak power. 35 degree angle, straight south. Perfect.

            On a very, very good day they produce 42 kWh here in Denmark. Our Hyundai Kona has a 64 kWh battery.

            If covering half of our roof with solar panels can't fully charge our EV on a really good day, covering all of our car with solar panels will be useless in the real world.

            So, forget about solar panels on your car. Put them on your garage instead - then they will at least provide a useful charge from time to time.

                @curiously I;ve seen some companies redo warehouse roofs with solar, it's happening out there. One place I know put solar in across their car park so they're shading the cars and getting free power. More companies will realise the benefits. It's just a matter of time.

                  @BitchinRob it's a fascinating concept!

                  We've already seen a solar powered plane flying all the place. Why not tiny cars.

                    @vwdasher totally, he was thinking about roofing that was only solar, rather than having a metal, tile shingle etc under as it reduced resources and cost. I'm in Australia and solar is now on most buildings and still growing. But all have roofs underneath as well. That kind of optimisation is all the more significant with cars, weight, aerdynamics etc battery range

                      @curiously I'm in Australia too, and I am seeing it in industrial applications more and more. Especially with new warehouses getting built. This one place has just used panels as a roof over their car park, I'd love to see that pop up at train stations everywhere. Imagine how much power you could get in all that space.

                        @vwdasher

                        I saw the video from Everything Electric a couple of days ago, and yes, it's cute and it can definitely do some good where there are limited options otherwise, but let's be real here. It's a very niche product for a very limited use case.

                        That said, I genuinely applaud them for making it, because it CAN do some good, and for short distances and light loads, it can be a great alternative to scooters and trikes and the like. But as soon as you enter tuk-tuk land with longer distances and heavier lods, you're already in trouble.
