I think I'm arriving at the "handful" option what I want, after all, is not so much "play with one effect at a time" as "play with guitar sounds" - which is just as much, if not more, about how effects interact with each other...

Of course this could mean buying one of every effect in existence, that's not quite where I am more like finding a cheap one that doesn't suck of each main category; drive, delay, modulation etc.

I have some good ideas already
