For audiosettings I use this script (installing pipewire and more): https://uddannelse.social/@mosgaard/115578594069577225

For this round of install the Wine-Staging install didn’t work through the script somehow, so I just manually installed the latest Wine, which turned out great (instead of Staging).

I use Millisecond for optimizing audio settings: https://flathub.org/en/apps/io.github.gaheldev.Millisecond

Bitwig will be my main Linux. It’s closest to what I know for sounddesign (Ableton), and their use of Pipewire in the settings make it really nice. There is one problem: Sometimes I can’t type using the keyboard, I’m pretty sure this will be solved in an update soon.

For stability, running native apps and plugins is a must. Studio One, which I normally use for songwriting and mixing, is in beta, which you can feel. It’s not mature enough, to be a stable first choice.

I ended up buying some native plugins, where I would normally use similar plugins on MacOS.

      I got:
Kazrog - For emulations of compressors and EQ
      AudioThing - For effects
And the honourable mention @theonlywaveforms for a nice Dark reverb, and for hanging out here on Mastodon!

The rest will be Bitwig Plugins and what I can make work through Wine/Yabridge.

Regarding Wine/Yabridge: I’m not completely sure when it startet kind of working. I have had a lot of trial/error, and now I seem to be able to install most plugins, but the mouse is not working in the GUI. Sometimes you can make it work, by moving the window to the upper left of the screen.

I use the latest Wine and Yabridge from the CachyOS packages. I use a function called “Wine Installer” which I’m not completely sure where came from. That has also been a lot of trial/error.

And then there is all the native free/donate plugins, which I have found on the way:
          - Airwindows (Starter Pack, not testet)
          - AP Mastering
          - Auburn
          - AudioThing
          - Mensla
          - SuperflyDSP (not testet yet)
          - TAL
          - U-he
          - ZAM Plugins
          - ZL Audio

Remember to support developers of native plugins, so we can get more!

Last but not least. I have, for now chosen not to get a dedicated audio device.

I have two Zoom devices I can use for mic/line inputs, but when I don’t need to have inputs, I just use the build in audio device in my Lenovo Dock. I have UAD devices for my Mac, and just run the sound through my Apollo 8P, which doesn’t need to be connected to a computer to send audio to the monitors.

If I get vocal work, I can use my hardware channelstrip (ISA 220), so I’m not in a hurry.

I will keep my MacBook and UAD system around for now. I have too many unfinished projects I’m not ready to leave behind, and there can be audio work, where I need RX or one of the other plugins I can’t use on Linux yet.

But I’m pretty sure it’s just of matter of time. I love following the #LinuxAudio community here on Mastodon, cheering on @amadeus and @linuxaudiodevelopment, writing to vendors I’d like to support Linux etc…

It only get’s better from now on!

@mosgaard @amadeus @linuxaudiodevelopment Great thread, thanks for sharing - I might even find something I can use in my still-unsuccessful attempt at getting my other Mac working for #BedroomProducer stuff...

Will share & credit if something works 😊

@mosgaard Script. It ran just fine, so I have to assume it did what it was supposed to - but audio still utterly does not work.
