Wow I've never had so many quince flowers. Maybe this is the year we'll finally get some fruit.
#bloomscrolling #quince@dillyd wait wait. I'm not sure if you're teasing or if I'm reply-guying information that isn't welcome but... That's not a quince proper like you eat, Cydonia oblonga, which is a small tree like an apple tree. That's a so-called ornamental quince, a shrub, Chaenomeles japonica. It sometimes produces a few funny little tiny fruits which make visual interest in winter, but as far as I know there's not much you can do with them to eat.

@Tarnport@mastodon.green Then your knowledge is not based on experience. The fruits are delicious. For my palate, and most people that taste it, it is more aromatic than the common quince. @dillyd@turtleisland.social

@dillyd@turtleisland.social People are discussing whether this is a quince or not. The common names are not great here. Where I live, we call it "rose quince" - a typical English name is flowering quince. Yes, it's a different genus than the common quince Cydonia. The fruit are not only the edible, they are delicious. We use them in jam especially, but they make a great lemonade too and addition to savory food. Good luck!

@malterod I'm so glad to hear this. I was curious so I just read the Wikipedia page and they did say it was not toxic (don't know mention of people using it as food which may be should be amended!). I will gather some and experiment this year! Thanks for the good direction.
