On the Fediverse, if one server goes down the others carry on working. Posts involving a server that is down are automatically put in a queue and delivered when the server goes back up.
This is one of the strengths of the Fedi, parts of it may break but the network as a whole doesn't because it's spread out on thousands of different servers. Its eggs aren't all in one basket.
This is in contrast to centralised services like Facebook, Twitter/X, BlueSky etc where the whole network can go down.

Is a side effect of that "network of independent servers", the reason why we sometimes see a double post?
I've seen a post, and then I'll see it again a few posts up the feed, including stuff I've written.

Is this on a particular app that you see this?
I've sometimes seen this on the official Mastodon app and it seems to be a temporary glitch that goes away by itself.

(Disregard the red filter, I'm using a blue blocker that in reality isn't noticeably tinted during use)

Yeah, that looks like the glitch, you can ignore it. It's not the network, it's the app. The posts aren't actually being repeated, the app is just displaying it twice for some reason.
If you view the same thread in the website interface for example, you won't see the repeated posts.
You don't have to use the official app by the way. Most people who try third party apps prefer them, for example Tusky, Fedilab or Moshidon for Android.

@FediTips In all my years of using twitter I have only had it go down twice, and I've had an account since 2009. I have been through several mastodon servers, however.

Twitter has gone down more than twice since 2009, surely? The "failwhale" was a very common occurence.
