the automatic subtitles on YouTube are not properly accessible. swear words being blanked out is not neutral accessibility for Deaf people like me. if the person in the video is swearing, we need to have that information conveyed to us, not [_____]. we are Deaf, not children. but no one wants to talk about this.
@love also they put subtitles behind subscribe buttons and ads.

@love@social.lol youtube has incredible tools for finding whether a video has copyrighted content, but they can't even use OCR to create a list of words for the subtitle generation to use as reference, so it constantly gets stuff wrong as well

@love This can be turned off (caveat: only by the uploader) in Youtube Studio.
Go to: Youtube Studio, Settings, Under "Content" turn "Censor auto-captions" off.
This should be up to the viewer, to be clear, and not the uploader (who may not even be aware that this option exists, because Youtube is great at hiding/removing features that actually benefit people...)
@silverface@cyberpunk.lol @love@social.lol It's actually under Channel -> Advanced Setting. I turned it off now. I swear a lot in my videos.

@hayley @love @winter i wonder what would have happened if youtube had just said no, quoting the bbc subtitle guidelines as a trusted third-party source https://www.bbc.co.uk/accessibility/forproducts/guides/subtitles/

@love I'VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT THIS OMG!! And like, the one-word-at-a-time popping up is pretty difficult to read. I'm not deaf but I like subtitles to be able to understand people easier.
I miss when YouTube had community captions -

@love i want to have this conversation, but broader about algo speak and cursing/slur censorship in general. auto translation censoring this is just the peak of the shitberg. -

@love This seems like a violation of the American's with Disability Act, but Idk.

The automatic subtitles are unusable by anybody, because they aren't written in any parsable human language. A fine example of the race to the bottom that AI represents.
@RustyRing @love I have faulty ears and can say with absolute certainty that you are wrong. They're far from perfect, but they are useful.

@love Moreover, the automatic subtitles have gone worse and worse, no matter the language
I used to use them when there's noise around and I use them less and less due to it. -
@rogue_cells @love Let alone having tits.
