@hannah I'm not sure how to feel about it, but I'm reasonably sure they had HINGES set in a font with serif'd "I"s, saved out to something without embedded fonts (probably PDF / PostScript), and then got this fallback font replacement with the letters starting in the same places and nobody verifying / fixing the fallback font. (However, in that case you'd technically expect Helvetica as the PS fallback but this isn't quite that, so it might be a cheaper-to-license alternative.)
