@johnhattan @yosephus I suppose the image was primarily done for legacy evil "capitalistic"(tm) social media, which may delist the guy for speaking about negative things like death. I don't even mention that GPS is a military US technology, only later made available for civilians (and only recently with high precision), which I find quite funny to praised by a dude with sickle and hammer in the username.

This is not to undermine the scientific contribution of the doc, surely. May she rest in peace.

@torf @johnhattan @yosephus to this day there is a mandatory speed limit on civilian gps. It's not for technical reasons but because it could be used to improve targeting and accuracy of missiles. It's something around 5000 mph so you're never likely to encounter it unless you're building missiles but yeah. Her work was good enough to be accurate at those speeds but we are not allowed that unless you're military.

Yes, because if the US military (who couldn't invent their way out of a cardboard box) threw money at some scientist hoping it would help them bomb more towelheads, then they deserve all the credit. Without their amazing brown people bombing, we'd surely never invent anything at all. How dare anyone call themselves a Flag Bearing Communist, if they respect anyone whom the US military claims ownership of.

I mean, the whole internet upon which we stand was directly part of DARPA. But, y'know, our principles are always open to question in a quasi-anonymous public space.

I for one am in support of convincing paranoid fools that we can totally ensure their military victory, as long as they stay in their box, and everyone else benefits overall.

@yosephus @torf @johnhattan there's a bunch of technology that's military only. I did factory training for cnc machines. According to the trainer, 1 or 2 axis systems are cheap and easy to get, 3 or 4 are expensive but gettable. They make 5 axis machines but you need top security clearance to buy. He said "with 5 axis moving at the same time you can make interesting shapes which are especially interesting for those in the nuclear field". No idea what the shapes were though.

@torf @johnhattan @yosephus "Selective availability", which was the intentional degradation for civilian use, officially and permanently ended in 2000 (https://www.gps.gov/selective-availability), after it was regularly disabled anyway. I wouldn't call that recently. GPS III does not even have that feature anymore.
