passkeys are generally hated and distrusted by users?

passkeys are generally hated and distrusted by users? the things that keep trying to dark pattern me into using them instead of the password manager I chose? the things that won’t prevent my account from getting compromised when the service nagging me about passkeys gets hacked again? god I wonder why

you cannot imagine how many of my accounts I would not give a fuck about if they got compromised and all of them have nagged me about passkeys
did you want to secure an account anyway as a joke? we have something for that, it’s called the ssh keys in your home directory. and they work every fucking time and don’t particularly give a shit which device they’re on

oh no, someone might order things on my Amazon account! better pop up the fucking native passkey enrollment screen every time I look at my order history
it’d be really ironic if amazon sold some form of internet microphone speaker that was notorious for letting other people order things on your amazon account without your consent

@zzt keep in mind the actually fascist desire to ensure cryptographic and other security improvements are smeared relentlessly which is also why rust had to be killed in 2019

@zzt having a unique keypair for each service is in fact the ideal scenario (it should really be a double ratchet chain) and this is absolutely not something that can ever be allowed

“but what if you lose all the money in your bank account” it’s 2026, what money. all of these numbers are backed by the full faith and credit of 3-4 corporations playing grab-ass with a bunch of computer components because the investors believe that if you throw enough money at it you can make a literal god

@zzt keypairs are also trivial to transfer if you're not incredibly evil and can even be printed out or written down by hand it's just that absolutely no one would ever allow modern cryptography to be accessible by anyone with a phone

@zzt Have you seen what they do to the people who DO consent?

No, they do not tell you what they bought.

@zzt I (tried to) set my Flipper Zero up as a 2FA device and half of these fucking services and websites won't let me use it.

@zzt excuse me? what are you talking about? bank accounts are very different from other liabilities in finance. the restrictions and regulations are absolutely vicious. the present system is not capable to preserve us an ecosystem and a climate we could survive easily but it is extremely capable protecting capital. your bank account is absolutely safe for now.

@zzt if it came from a group other than FIDO and it was carefully considered and communicated and didn’t feel like another move fast and break things tech implementation to further lock you into their ecosystem, I’d consider it.
Till then, I’ll stick to passwords.
