@CiaraNi @janeishly People do not appreciate that librarians are usually the front line troops when governments and the powerful attempt to suppress knowledge and oppress the people.

They oppose book bans. They read to children. They allow people to just be in the library, without paying for anything. Legal forms. $3 Rental bikes to help people get around. When someone has a need, they don't judge them, they *help* them.

@Gargron This was even true in the 1600s, when the Companies of (human) Translators were translating the Bible into English (the so-called "King James" version, 1611).

Translations of human language require the ability to translate the _sense_ of some local or regional usage into something similar in the target language.

They include a footnote indicating that one passage was essentially untranslatable, because the phrase was not understood by anyone. So they used context instead.

@davidnjoku @cascheranno If you read the opinion in the case of all 5 publishers against the Internet Archive, you'll find their reasoning applies just as well if you remove the 'e' from "ebook" throughout. Which means the precedent is set; they're just waiting for the right time.

They will, sooner or later, get around to declaring libraries illegal, since they clearly "pirate" books by allowing people to read them without paying.
