When I quit my particle physics studies in Brazil, I started working on a social network project that used blogs to share scientific and educational knowledge. This took place between 2006 and 2009 at the largest university in South America.

The idea was to create a decentralized social media platform for research and educational centers that could communicate with each other.

That dream was ahead of its time, but today I see it's happening!

At that time, I learned a lot from blogs and early social media. There were great forums with healthy discussions.

I remember making a friend who told me how she came out. She was a biologist, and I was a physicist. It was interesting to learn about the subject, see the emotions behind the screens, and then become friends in real life.

In Brazil, I saw many cases where people used internet forums to realize that there was nothing wrong with being themselves.

@hpod16 I wish I could read your beautiful thread as a blog post. May you share some of your blogs? What were they about?

@dirkblank @nopatience I agree with you. Mastodon is the most mature software I use on the Fediverse. I also use it more often, although I understood better Pixelfed dynamics more recently, because I prefer to communicate using words. That's also the reason recently I restarted a blog connected to the Fediverse, but I don't care if Mastodon team doesn't mention the other apps in using that are connected via one common protocol.

P. S. I've just content now: I have personal accounts on 7 different apps connected via AP. I use 95% of my time writing on my Mastodon account.

What would happen if prominent politicians had official, active accounts on the Fediverse? Public attention would certainly follow, as would journalists, who are obligated to track and report on political figures.

People don't leave the Fediverse solely because of technical hurdles. Many arrive, look around, and simply don't find enough reasons to stay. Retention is not just a usability problem, but also a matter of social density and relevance. With a sufficiently large and visible group of active participants, the Fediverse could generate its own gravity and flourish beyond the tech-savvy community.

@_elena in my opinion, it's a waste of energy. I'd rather focus bringing more politicians here
