  • Remember when Apple was the premium offering?
    james@scl.csns.xyzJ james@scl.csns.xyz

@caseyliss I’m old enough to remember when Apple ‘just worked’ rather than having to constantly check that [insert one of many current glitches I’m experiencing] is working. It makes me nostalgic for early 2000s Windows and Nokia phones.

@juliette @Pepijn Next time I’m in Billund! (Although, to offer more stalker reassurance, I’m worried it’s going to be a long time until that.)

@Pepijn @juliette Hahaha. I’m not a weird stalker, but saw that ages ago and it sits at the intersection of my interests in local government, LEGO, and running. I actually tried to work out where it was so I could check it out on a run when I was in Billund. (And to reassure you, even if I was a weird stalker, I’m not a very good one, I didn’t work out where it was.)

@Pepijn @juliette Hold it. Have I seen your profile before? Are you the guy who set up a bike repair station with some public funding in Billund?

@juliette @Pepijn Not quite sure I could (or even want to) get my ancient and heavy bike over there, but might try hiring one next time.

I do go for runs though, and note same thing everywhere, sometimes it’s really good infrastructure, sometimes you find yourself running on the edge of an horrendously busy road.

@Pepijn @juliette I’ve never cycled in Denmark, but when I’ve visited I’ve always liked how cycle- and pedestrian-friendly it is. (We’ve also never driven there, so are innocent of that one). I’ve always had the sense that Danish culture places a lot more value on time and play outdoors, too. I don’t know how true that actually is, and whether that feeds into cycling/pedestrian culture.

@juliette My link covered some of that (but wasn’t where I first saw it). Interesting you mention gender, my — purely anecdotal — take based on the cyclists I know is that women cyclists suffer much worse abuse than men.

@juliette Thanks, loads of citations to indulge me there! My only regret about cycling is that I didn’t get back into it sooner, but looking back I recognise a big part of that is the hostile road environment we’ve created.

As an aside, on my quick read I don’t think it mentioned the change in attitudes towards individual cyclists wearing safety gear (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1369847823001018). I know when I did a few rides with and without a helmet it felt the closer and fastest (and more aggressive) passes were when I was helmeted.

@juliette (Please read past the question, I’m not being ‘that guy’.) Do you have a source for this? Since I’ve started cycling again, after a long break, I’ve had a hypothesis that all the Lime bikes make it safer (although because the riders tend to be a bit lax on the Highway Code, forcing drivers to be more attentive). I’d love to know if there’s actually something that backs that up.
