As others have said, the hashtags are the way to go to curate your feed. Often the way to go is to simply type a hash character, followed by the subject you're interested in. The application you're using will supply a list of hashtags in use to choose from.
For example, a hashtag and 'book' will give you a suggestion of #bookstodon (among others).
