  • Age verification is a deliberate attack on system sovereignty, both for individuals and countries.
    joehenzi@social.vivaldi.netJ joehenzi@social.vivaldi.net

    @lalah @mhoye @thesquirrelfish It's a real conservative mindset that protects companies rights to make money on harmful products as opposed to stopping the ability for them to cause harm. Kids died, we have a duty to stop it. Doing nothing is a choice, not the only one. But people get really upset when you point out there are kids dying and they are choosing to do nothing - but that's their decision.

    @serapath @thesquirrelfish @mhoye you've said "epstein class" twice now in unrelated ways - no one is pushing for giving any data away, you're not replying to us. It's not even sensical.

    @serapath @mhoye @thesquirrelfish I have never in my life asked for age verification, you're replying to me saying to stop bringing it up as a solution

    @thesquirrelfish @mhoye we're all being abused - I'm super suspect of people out here defending these evil company's right to make money off us.

    @thesquirrelfish @mhoye exactly - the algorithm is the problem - it was connecting pedophiles with kids to keep both parties on platform... that's criminal. Asking for ID doesn't do anything.

    @mhoye @thesquirrelfish sigh, you're right, we should do nothing even though we have this mountain of evidence, it's the same...

    EDIT: Weird analogy, since you have to show ID to buy alcohol.

    @mhoye @thesquirrelfish sorry you're stuck in a loop - age verification is a red herring, you're going in circles on it

    to the point, you're now saying social media companies should police themselves for some reason?

    if there are products that are so harmful we need to protect people of certain ages then maybe, idk, we should get rid of those products

    @thesquirrelfish @mhoye Age verification is not a fix, but ignoring the problem isn't a fix either. People are addicted to social media and fighting to keep it, no matter who is dead.

  • A lot of liberals want to make it illegal for kids to be sad online and talk to their only friends (also online) about it rather than try to make the world someplace worth living in.

    @rupert @aburka @gwynnion

    lol, let me see, you want ME to defend what FACEBOOK is advocating and I am NOT?

    EDIT: To be clear, AGAIN, you're IGNORING that it's happening. 3 posts, can't once recognize social media led to their deaths, you're sole focus is on this ID thing. Basically, you are so focused on what you think you might lose here dead children do not matter. And I was worried Facebook was being immoral. Maybe it shouldn't exist at all.

    @rupert @aburka @gwynnion

    Here's what would make those stories similar: If Judas Priest documented, over and over, that they were putting lyrics into songs telling people to kill themselves and decided to NOT take them out. This is why Facebook lost in court and Judas Priest did not.

    Not sure why you're old enough to remember the case, but not the outcome, the trial, the facts, the differences, that there was 1 trial for 2 kids - that Facebook has a trail of dead bodies and internal documents showing they knew it was happening and did nothing.

    Yes, they are exactly the same!

    @rupert @aburka @gwynnion sigh - there is a difference, now there are dead kids and mountains of evidence, but look how you're brushing it off to protect your free microphone - this is healthy and fine!

    EDIT: I'm also old enough. But moral enough to spot the differences. Rap lyrics weren't actively matching pedophiles up to children - social media was doing that automatically. But compare them, that's sensical, to protect the adult's right to access kids. That's what you're protecting, not access to rap records... it's "the same".

    I like how in a thread about how social media is great and healthy and not bad for anyone we didn't discuss that topic but blocked people who pointed to evidence that wasn't true. It's almost as if social media is bad no matter the platform because humans shouldn't have it.

    @rupert @aburka @gwynnion Again, never advocated to turn over information to Facebook.

    >What we want is some evidence that turning even more personal information over to Facebook will stop kids killing themselves.

    Them being on it was getting them killed - you want MORE evidence, more dead bodies? Not sure what you're asking for here... they already went to court, they were found guilty, there is evidence.

    Forget uploading your ID - that's the false choice here. If it wasn't harmful, if it didn't exist, we'd not be talking about IDs.

    "No on here" is weird, there are trolls here, Nazi instances, CSAM on Fedi sites too. This isn't exempt.

    @aburka @gwynnion You mean like finding out how kids kill themselves over social media, how Facebook watched a million pedophiles a day talk to children and did nothing, that kind of bad stuff? Or we're blaming the suicides of children on the Iran war now? I agree it's important to protect the rights of Facebook to market to children, the S&P 500 depends on it.

    Don't let some dead kids get in your way. We "need" social media, it gave us Trump, they stole all our data and use it for things like Brexit - but please, we should protect it.
