  • The gas town guy has like 12 $200 Claude subscriptions to run like 20 bots to automate churn in a 20 year old game with literally 5 players in it. 10 if you count all the level 1 players who just came to grief it.

@jonny Thank you for your service, but why do you do this to yourself

@jonny This is an extreme example but there's quite a bit of "look! I built (actually an ungodly amount of tokens) a cheap-looking knock-off of Animal Crossing / Diablo / something else that already exists (that nobody will ever play)" when you look at these spaces.

  • You can bet your sweet bippy that AI boosters will still be using AlphaFold as one of their go-to examples of how useful we're supposed to believe AI is, though...

@folfdk @jwcph I hate so much how the much broader fields of AI (which has always been a marketing term though) and generative models have been conflated with LLMs in the popular imagination.

I'm seeing quite some indignation in Mastodon about the #AlphaFold team being shut down. I think some context from someone in this area may clarify some things. First, neither the AlphaFold models nor the AlphaFold database are going away, as some seem to be implying. In any case, this is an area of intense research with many players and AF-style models are now dime a dozen, including open-source alternatives with more permissive licenses (it's frankly hard to keep track of all the models that come out). Second, this doesn't mean Google is exiting this area; instead, these efforts will probably be redirected to closed-source work at Isomorphic (see IsoDDE). And finally, this is not really a surprise. John Jumper, who led the team, had already indicated last year his research focus was going to be elsewhere.
