  • I, for one, hail our EU overlords for staying their ground and not bending over to Apple.

@harrysintonen it's crazy how the apple fanboys get lied to and then defend apple for it.

@harrysintonen it's just crazy how bad apple fumbled the whole AI rollout. They had to rebrand it before release because it was that bad. And now people are mad at the EU?

Basically after apple told them 2 years their devices would be capable to have it and now even not all the newest iPhones get it.

They shouldn't be mad at the EU, but Apple. And they should use EU consumer protection to sue for a device that is capable as they have been promised that.

@richlv @zsolt @EUCommission @gklka yeah the emotions some people have talking about a product are crazy sometimes.

@zsolt @EUCommission @gklka yeah google tlmade their product DMA compliant in the first place. Google is already on the market and we know Siri is Gemini. Again. It is apples fault.

Don't complain about the referee when your team just got a deserved penalty.

Edit: misread the comment a bit. Which features are you talking about that were there before? It was called Siri, yes, but that is about it

@webjac @richlv @EUCommission the point here where apple does not want to comply is that they have to give third parties access to the APIs to offer a similar product on their platform.

Tell me how that is not sensible. They wanted to delay these APIs for 18 month while already offering their product, making adoption even worse for their competitors. Tell me how it was not sensible to say no to that. They could have just released the tools at the same time.

@webjac @richlv @EUCommission .. exactly for the reason that apple wouldn't give a crap about any of you(including me) if nobody held them accountable

@webjac @richlv @EUCommission again: the problem wouldn't be one if apple did their homework. They chose not to. Now we're here.

And not holding apple to known law would mean a competitive disadvantage to anybody else.

And regarding the writing to apple thing: they would not reply because I'm not important to them. And that is exactly why we need the EU to hold them accountable.

And the "I don't need/like the DMR so it can go away" argument is pretty bad for you in the long run as well.

@zsolt @EUCommission @gklka regarding the DMA: that's a completely different discussion. You were not ranting about the DMA though but that you don't have features because of the EU and that is Apple fanboying par excellence.

And USB-C will probably be replaced at some point in the very distant future, so no need to worry about that for now. Micro-USB was the standard for like 15 years so we're safe for now. And the standard for C is evolving independent from the connector

@webjac @EUCommission and I don't think apple wants to protect you. It wants you in their walled garden, protected from others. That's a huge difference

@webjac @EUCommission but that is the worst approach possible. If you have rules nobody is enforcing we'd end up with customer hostility and rampant capitalism sooner than later.

If there are rules, they have to be enforced for anybody the same way. And apple is a posterboy for trying to push the limit, so they had to be told off eventually. I hope the competitive disadvantage makes them rethink this.

That said I'm not against apple, I use some products myself.

@zsolt @EUCommission @gklka you do see that you ranting about this is the exact reason why apple is doing that: trying to put pressure on an institution they don't like by skewing the facts.

They knew for 4 years what's in the DMA and chose not to comply. It's on them.

By the way: you can also thank the EU for USB C charging on you iPhone. Apple tried to not do that until the EU basically told them to either comply or GTFO the European market

@webjac @EUCommission the point is, as said before that the EU not prohibiting Apple to introduce Siri. It is only prohibiting Apple from using unfair competition to not let any other competitor provide the same service.

And apple then chose not to release Siri because they are not able to provide that, blaming the EU for it like a toddler throwing a tantrum.

They still can release it at the same time they provide the API for others to do the same, which they wanted to build over 18 month

    mr_harm@mastodon.socialM mr_harm@mastodon.social

@richh @libreoffice yeah but that seems to be more of a usage policy decision which file format to use in every organization. Sure, it would be nice to recommend using odt, but that is not something you'd find in press releases regarding new products.

And it is kind of implied to use the native format to achieve best results. Also, a short web search showed that already quite a few organizations committed to it (Germany and the Netherlands,...)

@libreoffice can you explain why using the file format is strengthening Microsoft even if not using their product?

I've just understood it to be a practical decision since ooxml seems to be most widely used and support is mandatory to continue operation. I may miss some information here, but I've always thought a file format, even if proprietary, is just a decision regarding performance.

And you guys did a great job in keeping the file format usable in you product, so what's the problem?
