I find that when people refer to social media "algorithms" they’re referring to places like YouTube where the "algorithm" has machine learning. There’s a difference between that sort of thing and a simple algorithm (as in the proper term) that collects posts since you last logged off, sorts them by which ones were most active when you log back in and plays those back.

I know some instance software has "trending" and other tabs but those are only local to the instance. I was a bit hesitant at first to join fedi because I knew everything was chronological. It gets frustrating occasionally with my friends who are in different timezones but overall… my interactions feel a lot more natural. I find posts because my friends share them, not because some algorithm picks up on it.
