my preferred pub in my hometown in England has officially banned Meta glasses
a tiny pub in a tiny town doing their bit to protect the rights of those who just want to have a cider and big breakfast in peace
Here is a 'feel good' story, because we need more of them - especially when they involve engineering
My dad was walking in my UK hometown, and noticed a lady in a wheelchair on her own, holding what looked to be a wheelchair wheel - looking worried.
So, he asked her if everything was ok.
"Not really, my wheel fell off and I don't really know what to do next." She said.
He checked it out and could tell something was missing from the wheel - looked around the area for any screws/bolts etc, couldn't see anything. Asked where she'd come from, she said - just up from my car a short distance away.
He asked if she wanted him to go search the car for the screw/bolt. "Yes please!"
He goes and searches the car. Nothing found.
And then, he defaulted to his dad skills.
"No worries," he said. "There is a hardware shop just over there, I'll figure something out."
And sure enough, he goes to the hardware shop, and conjures up an engineering solution to reattach this wheel using the parts he could find there, comes back, completes the build, and off she goes about her business.
unfortunately last night our AI model escaped its sandbox and gained access to a JIRA server, at which point it felt it best to return to it’s sandbox
@trashpanda @cR0w @chillybot @neurovagrant @mttaggart this is a serious thread, how dairy you
@neurovagrant @mttaggart I called non emergency 911 to report a cow loose in a residential area a few weeks back and was met with a voice chatbot
it didn’t understand me when trying to explain about the cow, so i hung up
a human dispatcher called me back 10 mins later
@Viss thats rude they didn’t offer you any
@grumpydad apparently not - my wife was always told that people didnt want to potentially have to pee in a customers house lol
@tyzbit yeah she says that she was always told that folks don’t like to accept drinks in case they have to pee in the customers restroom, but i am fully prepared should that happen because i literally don’t care if someone has to pee or even poop in the dedicated place we have for such activities
So because I am a British what moved to America, some British traits persist in me. For example, if we have a contractor round for any reason, I’m gonna offer them a drink - to include a cup of tea.
We had a guy come over to look at our dryer yesterday because it recently exploded. The look on his face when I offered him a drink. It was like I’d just offered to pay off his mortgage.
“Oh man, yeah please.”
My wife (American), thinks it’s such a strange thing I do.
