    @0x0ddc0ffee Bravissimo! That rocks. Excellent choice.

    I have only one. There was one copy for sale in Bangalore (US edition, so ridiculously expensive by Indian standards). So I went and won a trivia contest whose prize money covered its cost. So I'm not about to forget I own it.

    My copy still says "$14.11 Rs. 237/70" on the front page ("Rs." = INR). I guess the exchange ratio was 16.8 at the time. Now it's 91.6…

  • Twice as many people die in car accidents *every day*.

    @xgebi
    My alt text contains the full links to my sources.

    I was comparing to US car deaths because this is from a US newspaper. That is *a* reasonable point of comparison: what does the US paper choose to report, or even what it contextualizes (e.g., it could have put that Spanish number in context, whether in Spain or the US).

    And finally, it is better to ask questions first and confirm the facts before accusing someone of something as extreme as "manipulat[ing] data".

    @unlambda Yes to all that, but also, I think people feel they are in control in the car (even though they're not), but feel a lack of control in a plane or train (even though it's driven by much more expert people).

    The Brightline story is very complicated and it's really not clear how much of it can be attributed to Brightline per se. But yes, it's a GREAT example of how train accidents can be (not) reported just like car accidents.
