LLM code is the lead pipe of our generation of software engineers. -
Spend the day talking to workers council members about "AI".@larsmb I didn’t know how much I wanted to scream until I read this…

Spend the day talking to workers council members about "AI".@tante I can’t get an answer to a simple question for the last few months: „what’s the goal and how will you know we’ve achieved it specifically thanks to AI?”
Because if the work I’ve been doing to remove obstacles to productivity for the last year and a half will get attributed to this bullshit, I’ll start complying maliciously.

Machine translations are often brought up as a gotcha whenever I criticize LLMs.@Gargron Funnily enough, literature is an easier translation target than social media. The latter is ever evolving, the former is frozen in time.

Excuse you some of us are both. What do you mean „or”?

Blocking someone should remove their replies from your posts, this is the type of safety features we need in the Fediverse!@alterelefant @dansup On your instance - yes. Do you want to alert their instance about it, however? What if it’s a modified instance that ignores and logs such requests for their perusal? What if they are obsessive?
ActivityPub recommends to not send out Block activities, which mastodon deliberately ignores - https://docs.joinmastodon.org/spec/activitypub/#Block
IMO users need to be warned about this when they try to block, because it has implications that are especially dangerous for those who most need the feature.

Fun fact to keep you awake tonight: Just had a chat with an atmospheric chemist and the best comparison she could come up with for the pollution that would result from burning up 1 million "AI datacenter" satellites in Earth's atmosphere is a nuclear war.@sundogplanets They might be overestimating the effects of a nuclear war.

When talking about the energy consumed by LLMs don't be fooled by arguments focusing solely on the direct power consumption of these models, because they are externalizing a lot of it.@dysfun @gabrielesvelto Which results in the same if not larger energy bill.
