I'm famously unselfconscious but I just smiled in a bathroom mirror and saw that a blueberry from breakfast, which was 3 hours ago, had shed its entire skin to laminate one of my front teeth solid black. -

Can you just imagine me walking around greeting people with a straight face and a polite smile and this giant black front tooth.

The physics of how this could possibly happen without me feeling it escapes me, but I've been walking around like this for hours. People could only have thought it was a Halloween costume. For once I am (slightly) embarrassed, but what can you do? Get better friends, at least!

As the old saying goes, "all mushrooms are edible; some are just edible once." Then you die and they pour your liver out like a dirty oil pan.
Y'all please do not eat fungi you can't trust 10 times over with a solid ID. If you find yourself texting a friend to ask if it's edible, the answer is don't eat it. That goes for all plants but especially for fungus.

All of these things are surprising, some for existing and others in that they warrant mention at all. Perhaps I should be asking more specific questions.

As someone who could not tell you anything about my computer past what color it is, I just want to say that I'm personally glad that others are keeping up and are technically astute. Even if I don't understand the jargon or issues at stake, I still applaud and take comfort in the granular expertise, as I do in all fields. I find it a pleasure to see. That's all.

A.S.A.S. Byatt is not for everyone but she will always have my heart. While I'm busy trying to think through storylines and metaphors on the ground, she's building empires I can't even see to see across time and space. Every once in a while I glimpse the larger structure and swoon. In the last 15 pages she's revealed relationships that she's developed and braided together over 3 books. How did she do that, so naturally that it now seems obvious and inevitable, not at all a surprise?
