@athayes Yeah, there does seem to be a lot more DIY and self-initiative on the Fedi than I knew how to navigate. I'm getting the hang of it. I'm sure it'll be more rewarding than a lot of the other social media I've been on in the long run.

@SuperMoosie I love hearing about other places. My friend in Melbourne laments that not enough people outside of Australia know or care about it beyond the stereotypical scary wildlife, so honestly just seeing your posts about how things are is good enough for me.

Problem was that when I got to the Fediverse, I didn't know how to find anything and my feed felt really landlocked and small. I downloaded Tusky the app back in 2022 and then didn't do a lot with it.

All these replies helped a lot.

I appreciate all the reccs! Masto itself has been unintuitive so far for me but the people here are lovely! This thread popped off way more than I was expecting, lol, but now I have a better grasp on how to make it work. It's worth the learning curve.

@donhawkins @thejessiekirk I am very glad that you didn't let yourself get taken in by propaganda. I'm just sad for all the folks that have, who've let themselves get changed by hateful shifting goalposts and misinformation.

The world as it is today has been engineered by many horrible people in charge to be the shithole it is now, but it could've been good. And with effort, I hope it swings the other direction before it's too late (esp climate-wise).

@donhawkins @thejessiekirk Oh yeah, I know. And they've had to settle lawsuits in the past by pleading that they aren't "real" news, yet they're allowed to broadcast as if they are. And too many of my fellow USians believe they are! It's infuriating.

@thejessiekirk It was really awful & strange watching my dad go from a usually kind, helpful human being to being brainwashed with politically-charged language by FOX news. Before he died, he became such a bitter human being, & it sucks that that's happening in a lot of places to a lot of people in the US.

Take away the loaded political terms & folks are *usually* more reasonable, but language divides as easily as it connects. Tribalism is poisonous.

@isocat I think I found some hashtags that work? Mostly writing, art, birds, nature stuff, random science. Roughly that order. Idk, my interests are broad overall. I wanted to find an alt to bsky in case the venture cap assholes in charge of it decide to fuck it up (more).

I like the idea of the Fediverse but it took a hot minute to understand how to get anything out of it. A bunch of lovely people in the replies to this post pointed me in the right direction, so I'm following a lot more accts.

@Scofisticated Totally fair! Socials mean different things to different people. It was just weird to me when I showed up that I couldn't see basically anything. I was used to other platforms and following people after I saw something of someone on a general feed to know whether I was going to like their account or not. But here it seems to work the opposite: follow fast, unfollow if necessary.

Which is fine. It just wasn't intuitive behavior for me.

I was here a long time ago for a bit but felt kinda isolated and didn't know how to find enough people with shared interests (mostly creative stuff & niche nerds who like to talk about their various science, also bird enthusiasts and certain fandoms). Trying to fix that this time.
