Buy it for Life

A place to share practical, durable and quality made products that are made to last, with an emphasis on upcycled and sustainable products!

Guidelines:

Things that are well-made and durable (even if they won’t last a lifetime) are A-Okay!

Unlike that other BIFL place, Home-made and DIY items are encouraged here, as long as some form of instruction is included in the body of the post.

Videos links are not allowed as post titles, but you may use them in a text post.

A limited amount of self-promotion is accepted, IF the item you are selling aligns with this criteria:

  1. The item must be made with sustainable or recycled materials.
  2. If electronic in some way, the item must be open-source.
  3. The item must be user-serviceable (if applicable).
  4. You cannot be a large corporation.
  5. The post must be clearly marked with a [Self Promotion] tag in your title.

That’s quite interesting. I can see the benefits offered by each arrangement, curious to me that they opted to swap pin functions from 3-to-4 (as opposed to adding the extra ground on the extra pin and keeping everything else the same,) but I suppose this also ensures that things don’t ‘half-work in a weird way’ if someone uses the wrong connection method.

My local Radio Shacks closed on 2015 - 2017, which isn’t crazy long ago. I think I made some purchases on their website after that, which is still going.

Maybe you could try those “2-in-1” shorts? Instead of a mesh liner they have solid fabric “underwear” sewn into the shorts themselves. Unless these are the ones you’re wearing right now. I also wonder if you bought Patagonia shorts (they only have mesh liners, not full spandex) and then brought them to their repair program (check if you have their store locally). Not sure if they’d replace the liner for you, maybe ask their customer support

Counterintuitive, but do they make skinny jeans without elastane? I’ve seen people complain about elastane blends greatly reducing the longevity of the pants

Well, the current range is 30", but it only has a counter to one side, so I could go with any size. It’s just me and my wife though, so 48" is probably excessive for my use.

Your biggest worry with something that’s connected to the internet are security updates and in general nobody will support a product indefinitely Don’t know about indefinitely but Turris do so far, and that doesn’t look like it’s going to change any time soon. Edit: Heck, they even offered hardware upgrades for previous releases, whilst still supporting all products with software updates.

I have 4 of them, and if I were to fill and empty them as they froze, I’d end up with an overflowing container in about 3 days. And Im in Arizona in the summer.

America’s Test Kitchen has a bunch of reviews Edit: as others have said, look at restaurant supply stores in your area. Besides stainless, I’d also recommend carbon steel or cast iron since you’re looking for durability and food safety.

I also got one of these recently. The build quality wasn’t as good as I had hoped, but it’s a fun little device and seems like it’ll last a long time. The software is a tad low quality, and I’m worried that it’ll never be updated again since the device is apparently discontinued. On the flip side, it’s not bad for a cheap low power device, and it’s easy to navigate. This device does support Bluetooth, and ones able to pair it with the Beats Flex. It’s weird though because the player and headphones use different volume adjustments, which is one of my low-quality software complaints. Personally, I would’ve rather had an iPod nano 3rd gen.

If you want something durable it’s best to go with two piece poles rather than three pieces. When poles bend or break it’s always on the bottom piece because it’s the thinnest. Unfortunately two piece poles can be hard to find. I’ve been considering getting some MSR poles because it’s a reputable brand and is only two pieces. I just wish they came with a cork handle option because I’ve gotten used to cork and will miss it. https://cascadedesigns.com/products/dynalock-trail-backcountry-poles These are supposedly designed for snowshoeing, which makes sense considering the only time I’ve bent a pole it was while snowshoeing. If you’re looking for maximum durability, these are a good option.

Oki (formerly Okidata) has always had the ethical higher ground, above Brother, AFAICT. Brother does partake in ink waste shenanigans with their inkjets. But you can’t be in the US. Oki pulled out of the US marketplace.

Yep, just buy a used latitude 5290 for under 200€. 12" display, same CPU offerings and upgradable ram and storage. But take care of it, it’s not indestructible like a Thinkpad. Oppose capitalism by buying used, not by buying shitty, overpriced Rockchip devices.
